Supervision of Independent Studies and Internships

Back

Independent Studies

Students engaged in an independent research/reading project or working with a professor on a research project may register for an Independent Study/Research course in the appropriate department.  These courses may carry 1.0, 0.5, or 0.25 credits, as indicated in the catalog.  The specific requirements for Independent Studies and the procedure for applying for them are set by individual departments. In all cases the workload and expectations for a project should be commensurate with the credit.

Department chairs are responsible for working with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Administration to ensure that students are properly registered for independent studies. Procedures for registering students can be found on the Department Chair Information page.

Although supervision of Independent Studies often includes both direct contact hours with students (teaching, discussion, proctoring exams) as well as preparation/grading time, stipends for supervision are based only upon the total number of direct contact hours.  Faculty are free to work out the precise schedule of contact hours with their students (e.g., some weeks may have more contact hours than others). The following pay scale is used for stipends:

  • Fewer than 20 contact hours:  $125
  • At least 20 contact hours:  $200
  • At least 30 contact hours:  $300

Stipends are paid once a final grade has been submitted and the contact hours have been confirmed with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Administration.

Internships

The specific requirements for Intership credit and the procedure for applying are set by individual departments.

Department chairs are responsible for working with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Administration to ensure that students are properly registered for internships. Procedures for registering students can be found on the Department Chair Information page.

Supervision of individual students is compensated at a flat rate of $125.  Stipends are paid once a final grade has been submitted.
