What other services does the Writing Center offer?
The Writing Center is a place where writers working in any discipline meet with trained peer tutors in informal, one-on-one tutoring sessions that focus on the art of writing and composing ad delivering oral presentations.
The Writing Center is located on the right as you enter Fintel Library, Room 15.
The Writing Center welcomes writers working at any level of experience and proficiency. Whether you are a freshman struggling with mechanics in a first-year seminar, a junior getting ready to deliver an oral presentation in an INQ 260 course, or a senior honors student in biology brainstorming ideas for a thesis project, the tutors in The Writing Center can provide valuable feedback and guidance.
Writers are welcome and encouraged to seek tutoring at any stage of the writing process: brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and/or editing. The same is true for oral presentations: you may work on developing an outline or refining organization, or you can practice your almost-finished presentation to get feedback on effective delivery. Students are encouraged to seek assistance as early in the process as possible to allow for plenty of time to implement revisions, edits, or other changes that will improve the text's or presentation's effectiveness.
Come to The Writing Center with the assignment and any prewriting, outlining, or drafts in hand that you may have already been working on. If you haven't gotten that far, bring your questions and ideas. If you are writing about a particular text or texts, or you have a few Power Point slides already developed, bring those, too.
The Writing Center tutors will help you brainstorm ideas, organize your work, construct or improve a central idea or thesis statement, incorporate sources appropriately, and/or explain how you can identify and learn to correct grammar problems in your writing. They can also talk to you about citation formats and specific forms of writing-lab reports, proposals, etc. For oral presentation assignments, tutors can offer feedback on your outline and organization, or they can watch you practice your presentation and offer tips on effective delivery.
No; tutors will not revise, proofread, edit, or correct your work FOR you. Tutoring sessions are collaborative conversations between the tutor and you, and you, as the writer, are the decision-maker. If you wish, you may submit a copy of your paper online when you schedule an appointment for the tutor to read over ahead of time if possible, but the tutor will not mark it up. Tutoring sessions generally last half an hour.
Tutoring is a FREE service for Roanoke College students, faculty, and staff.
Writers may schedule appointments by calling or stopping by the Writing Center or going to our online schedule at https://roanoke.mywconline.com/ and selecting a day and time. Enter your name and password and click on "Writing Center." Drop-ins are also welcome, as long as a tutor is available. Writers are asked to limit their appointments to a maximum of one per day, although students working on papers of 8 pages or more may schedule up to two appointments back to back. Our experience shows that tutoring is most effective with frequent writer/tutor meetings, so writers working on long projects are encouraged to schedule several appointments over several days' or weeks' time.
The Writing Center also offers a variety of writing-related workshops and creative writing playshops. Check out the list on our Workshops and Playshops page. You are invited to suggest topics for workshops. We also host several special events throughout the year, including our annual celebration of the National Day on Writing in October, Roanoke Writes! Week.
