Faith and Reason Lecture/Dinners for Faculty and Administrators
September 23 - Copenhaver Scholars Michal and Katka Valcov: "From Atheism to Faith in Post-Communist Eastern Europe." Guests from Slovakia. 22 faculty and administrators attended.
November 18 - Sarah and Andrew Wilson: "Here I Walk," an illustrated lecture on the Wilsons' ecumenical pilgrimage in the steeps of Luther from Erfurt to Rome 500 years later. Fifty people attended the talk and 23 attended the dinner and conversation afterwards.
January 20 - Matthew Fleenor, Assistant Professor in Physics: "Grand Unification-Aspiring to a Life of Congruity and Integrity" to 33 faculty, administrators, and guests.
March 17 - Donald Schmeltekopf, Provost Emeritus of Baylor University, on: "The Burning Question at Baylor-Can a University Become a First-Rate Research University without Losing its Soul" to 30 faculty, administrators, and guests.
Public Events
October 26 - George Weigel, Ethics and Public Policy Center, Catholic commentator and biographer of Pope John Paul II spoke on: "The Meaning of Pope John Paul II for Church and World" to 210 attendees in the Wortmann Ballroom. The lecture was followed by a dinner honoring Weigel and various members of the Roanoke Catholic community, both lay and clerical. Thirty- two attended the dinner.
November 9 - Matthew Continetti of The Weekly Standard and Paul Glastris of The Washington Monthly reflected on "The Meaning of the Election of 2010" in the Bast Center to 300 persons. Co-sponsored with the Fowler Program.
January 27 - Rabbi Eugene Korn and Professor Gerald McDermott conducted a dialogue on "What Can Christians and Jews Learn from Each Other?" to a full Antrim Chapel of 300. Rabbi Korn is the American Director of the Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding and Cooperation in Israel and Gerald McDermott is Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College. Co-sponsored with the Blakley Program in Evangelical Studies.
April 6 - Jody Bottum of First Things and Jon Meacham of Newsweek carried on a conversation on "The Next America: Is America Still Exceptional?" in Bast Gymnasium at 7:30PM to 500. Twenty minute lectures by each speaker were followed by a conversation between the two and then questions from the floor filtered through a faculty panel. The Director was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Co-sponsored with the Fowler Program.
Annual Crumley Lecture (by invitation)
March 31 - Jean Bethke Elshtain, Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, lectured to 95 persons in the Pickle Lounge at 4:30PM on "The Blessings and Burdens of a Christian Political Philosopher." The lecture was followed by a reception in the Atrium of Colket and then a dinner in the Wortmann Ballroom. The dinner was preceded by short presentations by Kathryn Buchanan and Director Robert Benne, who offered a tribute to Ms. Buchanan as she retired that very day from Roanoke College. She and the Director worked together on the Crumley for all 13 years of its duration.
