Wireless Troubleshooting
Items that can cause interference with Wi-Fi connections include:
- Ceiling fans
- Washing machines
- Clothes dryers
- Cordless phones in the 2.4 GHz frequency
- Certain home security equipment
- Monitors (ie. Baby monitors)
- Electric heaters
- Microwaves
- Dishwashers (to a lesser extent)
- Other items that can cause RF “noise”
Note:The interference occurs during the operation of the appliance. When the appliance is turned off, the Wi-Fi connection should be stronger due to a drop in radio interference.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- Keep your antenna at least 6 inches away from the wall or other objects
- Be sure the PC card antenna is not pushed behind or under furniture, desks, etc.
- If using a desktop PC, consider purchasing a USB Wi-Fi PC card. The USB cable is usually about 6 feet in length. This allows for the antenna on the computer to be relocated in order to establish a stronger connection.
- Be sure you have configured the network card to the proper SSID and channel. (Call the helpdesk for the best settings to use for your network card.)
- Call the Roanoke College Helpdesk if you continue to have problems or questions at 375-2225.
