Campus Safety Best Practices

In 2006 the Virginia State Crime Commission issued a report identifying twenty seven "Best Practices" for campus safety and security. Roanoke College and the Campus Safety office met 21 of the 23 practices that were applicable to private colleges.

Community Policing

Community policing is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies which support partnerships and problem solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. Collaboration with the campus community, daily interactions with students, open communications,  and proactive problem solving are keys to the success of this model.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

The office works and consults with the Physical Plant and Grounds Departments, Residence  Life, and the college architect to help in the design and maintenance of grounds and buildings that  promote  safety and security.
