Initiatives Across Campus

Building and Grounds:

  • We are using 1.6 gal. Water saving toilets on all new construction and all replacement toilets.
  • Water restricting, 2.0 aerators are used in new construction and replacement faucets.
  • "Leed Certification" is planned for the upcoming renovation of Lucas Hall.
  • A future "energy audit" for campus buildings is an important part of maintenance plans.
  • The renovation and expansion of the 1st year Complex (Mr. Tabor, Shenandoah, Blue Ridge) incorporates many energy saving items. This includes but not limited to new energy efficient windows, HVAC system, water heaters, lighting, water-saving toilets.
  • As part of the Chalmer's Hall renovation, we have installed energy efficient lighting, water heaters, water saving faucets, toilets, showers, etc.
  • We are in the process of upgrading all fluorescent lighting to new more energy efficient bulbs and fixtures (changing to T-8 tubes with electronic ballasts).
  • We have replaced the old windows in Alumni Gym with new "energy efficient" windows.
  • Windows in the library study lounges have been upgraded to "energy efficient" models.
  • Water heaters in Smith-Bartlett and Marion halls have recently been replaced with "energy efficient "models.
  • We have purchased a "bulb eater" to grind old florescent tubes. The ground-up glass is then picked-up for recycling.
  • All used motor oil is picked up by recycling companies.

Landscaping and Grounds:

  • compostThe fall leaf removal on campus is accomplished by accumulating the leaves through a shredder and transferring to our maintenance lot for composting.
  • The pavers used across campus are designed to adhere to EPA regulations and to contribute credits to LEED certification. Permeable pavers are preferable to other paving materials as they limit unnecessary storm water runoff.
  • Grass clippings are not removed, thus becoming mulch for the lawn.
  • The material from pruning of shrubs is shredded for mulch rather than ending up in the landfill.
  • Dead or damaged trees are cut and used for wood stove fuel or mulch.
  • To conserve resources we do not water trees and shrubs around most buildings.
  • A landscape master plan is in progress to upgrade our campus landscaping and make it more eco-friendly.
  • On "move-in weekend" we bring in special dumpsters for cardboard recycling.
  • Mulch layers meet recommended thicknesses.
  • Only one application of broadleaf herbicide per year is made to turf grass on campus. This is applied the week after graduation to minimize exposure to students, faculty and staff.
  • We fertilize the turf grass three times per season. This is considered a low maintenance program for cool season turf.

Dining Services:

  • New lighting in serving area is energy efficient.
  • Temperature control is being monitored constantly to maximize efficiency.
  • When substantial amounts of food are left over-it is taken to the Rescue Mission or RAM House.
  • Dishwashing machines and other machinery are operated at full capacity to maximize energy efficiency.
  • Clear plastic utensils and plates, although not biodegradable, are made from "Renewable Sources".
  • Napkins, paper plates and cups are made from recycled products and are biodegradable.
  • Trayless dining option is available and encouraged in the Commons to decrease food waste and water usage.

Bookstore initiatives:

  • Reusable bags will be used the beginning of this school year for text book purchases.
  • Some clothing items and tote bags are made from organic fiber.
  • Paper school supplies are made of recyclable materials and biodegradable.
  • All greeting cards are made from recycled paper and biodegradable.
  • Shopping bags are made from recyclable material and are biodegradable.
  • Customers are asked if they need a bag-no bag is automatically given with the sale.

Business Office:

  • Payroll is utilizing online advices for faculty/staff payroll rather than paper.
  • E-Commerce for parents to pay tuition bills online began last July.
  • Previously printed receipts were mailed out on each credit card payment. This practice has been discontinued saving paper and postage.
  • We have begun scanning back-up records into the imageworks system. Instead of preparing several daily large envelopes with information and backup paperwork, we now scan.
  • We are using recycled calculator paper.

Housekeeping:

  • Preference is given to vendors who provide recycled product, minimal product packaging, and who have their own written environmental stewardship policies.
  • Effort is being made to increase our use of chemical products approved by both Green Seal and the US Green Building Council.
  • Extensive training and annual retraining on proper dilution and safe use of cleaning chemicals is routine for all housekeeping dept. employees.
  • We purchase only vacuum cleaners and carpet extractors approved by the US Green Building Council for LEED certification.
  • Housekeeping is deeply involved with providing equipment, material, and labor resources to campus recycling.
  • Waste reduction is encouraged. We purchase paper towel and toilet tissue dispensers that maximize product usage and minimize waste.
  • Our pest control provider uses Integrated Pest Management and is a member of the National Pest Management Association.
