Roanoke College

Lutheran College

  • Roanoke College is the country’s second oldest Lutheran college and the only Lutheran college in the state of Virginia.
  • The tradition of the Lutheran college education is one that encourages the inquisitive mind by acknowledging that critical thinking and spiritual growth are both required for each to flourish. Roanoke College was founded by two Lutheran pastors, David F. Bittle and Christopher C. Baughman in 1842.
  • The College honors its Christian heritage and its partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America by nurturing dialogue between faith and reason.
  • There are seven religious life organizations for students to participate in that represent many different faiths and styles of fellowship.
  • The Center for Religion and Society brings Christian religious and moral perspectives—particularly in their Lutheran interpretation—to bear on contemporary challenges to the church and world.

Lutheran Scholarships

  • In addition to regular scholarships, grants and financial assistance, Roanoke College also has Lutheran scholarships worth an additional $1,000 per year.
  • The Lutheran Colleges Web site has additional information on Lutheran scholarships.
