Biology Department Majors and Minors
There are many ways students can gain firsthand experiences that will give them an edge in graduate school, professional school, or the work force. Our faculty have a dynamic and engaging array of research interests, and students have opportunities to participate fully in research as described below.
- Independent Study - Work directly with a professor in his or her research laboratory during the Fall and Spring semesters
- URAP (Undergraduate Research Assistants Program) - Work with a professor all four years of your undergraduate study
- Summer Research - Work with a professor during the summer with pay
In addition, our department offers a variety of May Term (Intensive Learning) courses that engage students on campus and through travel. Many of our students gain experience through internships with medical professionals and businesses in the area, while others also expand their horizons by studying abroad.
The Biology Department is housed in the Life Science Building, including a wide range of modern instrumentation such as a microscopy facility, tissue culture facility, thermal cyclers, and a greenhouse.
Graduate/Professional Schools and Careers
Ninety-one percent of those who participated in the alumni survey indicated receiving job offers or an acceptance to graduate school within six months of graduation. Biology Department students are entering competitive graduate schools, health professional schools, and businesses. Our students interested in health careers are guided by a Health Professions Advisory Group.
Clubs and Honor Societies for Biology Students
Getting involved in campus organizations provides a way to connect with other biology majors and environmental program majors. The Biology Club, Earthbound, SIHC, and three honor societies are among those that interest our students.
