What is it?
Writing it not merely an act of recording, but a process of discovery. People often say, "Words can't express what it is was like," but the writer believes that they can. But how does a writer move from the first inkling of an idea to a polished, published work? The Creative Writing major at Roanoke College provides students with the inspiration, the skills, and the dynamic community to analyze and create great writing. Because we believe "creativity" defines not just a person's own ability to write but also the ability to read and understand the writing of another. We study texts that span global literary traditions and genres. In small workshops students practice crafting and editing skills and receive feedback on their works-in-progress. This work stimulates a synthesis of students' learning in other fields, even as it trains the powers of discipline and concentration required for success in any sort of work.
