Real-world Learning - Fine Arts
Every year, students majoring in Art have the opportunity to showcase their work at the Art Majors Show. The show is held in the Olin galleries during the Spring.
The Roanoke College Choir is made up sixty members and perform concerts locally all throughout the year. Additionally, the choir is also known to perform with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra as well as traveling internationally to perform.
The Roanoke College Wind Ensemble is open to all students who have participated in their former school's concert band. Under the direction of Dr. Joseph Blaha, repertoire performed throughout the year is chosen from the master works of the wind band literature. Arrangements (some especially written for this ensemble) of important compositions for other media are also performed. Academic credit is available.
The Roanoke College Jazz Ensemble is devoted to the performance of the finest literature written for the large jazz ensemble (also known as Big Band Jazz). Arrangements ranging in style from Count Basie to Charles Mingus and beyond are featured. Student arrangements are encouraged. Ample opportunities for improvisation and interaction with members of the local jazz scene are provided. Academic credit is available.
The theatre program at Roanoke College offers students the opportunity to participate in both course work as well as firsthand learning by helping with the production of at least 4 different shows. Students also have the chance to experience many extracurricular activities and are also highly encouraged to do an independent study.
Many students expand their knowledge and skill sets in the field of fine arts through internship experiences off campus.
May Term is approximately a three week period during which students can participate in a wide array of Intensive Learning opportunities, including travel courses as well as on-campus courses.
The Summer Scholars Program at Roanoke College is a grant program that enables qualified students to conduct intensive, independent research for eight to twelve weeks during the summer.
Independent studies provide students with a practical application of their particular majors or more specialized study in a particular area.
URAP is a program unique to Roanoke College where students work as research assistants with a member of the Roanoke College faculty on an original research project of interest to both the URAP scholar and to the faculty mentor.
Roanoke College offers many study abroad programs that allow students to earn academic credit while outside the United States.
“Art doesn’t have to be just an object on the wall. It can move you or amuse you, or you can have an interaction with it that will change the way you look at something,” says Cassullo.
