HPAG sponsors a sound, innovative and exciting program for students who wish to pursue a career in the health professions. The group is committed to participating in the process of producing pre-health professions students who have the skills and habits of mind to be resourceful citizens, who have the broad liberal arts training necessary to be informed citizens and who have values and commitments that underlie responsible citizenship and service to broader communities.
 
As a recognized student organization on campus, the group has a constitution through the College's Student Government Association, which is included below. 

Constitution

Article I. NAME

The name of our group shall be Students Interested in Health Careers at Roanoke College.

Article II. PURPOSE

The purposes of the organization shall be to work independently and with the Health Professions Advisory Group to sponsor activities and programs related to health, medicine and the health professions and to foster a sense of camaraderie among students interested in the health professions.

Article III. MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to any person of the Roanoke College community.

Article IV. OFFICERS

Section 1. The officers of the group shall be:

  1. President
  2. Vice-President
  3. Secretary
  4. Treasurer
  5. Faculty Advisor

Section 2. The officers, shall be elected by a majority of the voting membership of the organization in annual elections. Elections will be held by electronic ballot in March of each year.

Section 3. Members of the Health Professions Advisory Group will serve as faculty advisors to the organization. One faculty member each year will serve on the Executive Council of the organization.

Section 4. The term of office for the officers will be the academic school year.

Section 5. A member must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or better in order to be eligible to hold an office. If a member's grade point average drops below a 2.75 during his or her time of office, then he or she must resign that office.

Section 6.Vacancies of office shall be filled by a special election conducted by electronic ballot within one month of the time at which the vacancy occurs.

Article V. MEETINGS

Section 1. Regular meetings will be held during the first week of each month in which the college is in session. The meeting time will rotate between Tuesdays at 11:50 a.m. and Wednesday evenings. These times may be altered when agreed upon by a majority of the members.

Section 2. Special meetings may be called by the president or upon request of any five active members.

Section 3. All members shall be notified of a special meeting at least one week before the time of the special meeting.

Section 4. A quorum shall consist of a simple majority of the membership.

Article VI. FUNDING

Section 1. All finances shall be handled in accordance with the established procedures in effect for the College.

Section 2. In the event of the loss of the group's recognition, any funds remaining in the college funds account shall revert to Student Life Council.

Article VII. AMENDMENTS

Section 1. Proposed amendments to this constitution or the by-laws of the constitution shall be presented at a regular meeting at least one meeting prior to being discussed and voted upon.

Section 2. Having been properly presented, amendments may be adopted by a simple majority of the membership at a regular meeting.

Section 3. Amendments shall go into effect immediately upon adoption.

Article VII. BY-LAWS

Section 1. By-laws may be adopted to provide operating procedures for this organization.

Section 2. By-laws may be passed or amended by a simple majority of the members voting.

Section 3. By-laws shall go into effect immediately upon adoption.

BY-LAWS

Article I. DUES

The dues shall be $10 per academic year and are payable during the month of September. The Executive Council may also establish a required level of participation in organization events.

Article II. DUTIES OF OFFICERS

Section 1. The duties of the President shall be to:

  1. Call any additional meetings.
  2. Preside over all meetings.
  3. Represent the organization as needed on and off the Roanoke College campus.
  4. Consult with the faculty advisors on all current concerns and activities.
  5. Chair the Executive Council.

Section 2. The duties of the Vice-President shall be to:

  1. Assume the duties of the president if he or she is unable to carry them out.
  2. Assist the president in administering the business of the group.
  3. Notify members of upcoming meetings and events.
  4. Organize publicity for organization events.
  5. Serve on the Executive Council.

Section 3. The duties of the Secretary shall be to:

  1. Record minutes of each group meeting and send them electronically to all members.
  2. Conduct any major correspondence concerning the group as a whole.
  3. Serve on the Executive Council.

Section 4. The duties of the Treasurer shall be to:

  1. Keep a record of all financial documents and submit all financial records to the Student Activities Office when required for audit.
  2. Sign all financial documents.
  3. Turn in all financial records for re-issue to the new treasurer when required.
  4. Serve on the Executive Council.

Section 5. The role of the Faculty Advisor shall be to:

  1. Assist the officers of the organization in any necessary business.
  2. Act as a liaison to the faculty and administration.
  3. Attend meetings when possible.
  4. Serve on the Executive Council.

Section 6. The Role of the Executive Council shall be to:

  1. Serve as a forum for discussion of the organization for its five members (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Faculty Advisor).
  2. Schedule organization meetings and events.
  3. Organize and plan organization meetings and events.

Article III. COMMITTEES

Section 1. The committees of the group will be formed as the need arises.

Section 2. Each committee will have a chairperson who is to be elected by the committee.

Section 3. All members of the organization shall be able to hold office, and/or serve on a committee of their choice.

Section 4. The term of office for the officers and the committee chairs will be from the beginning to the end of the academic year following the election.
