S.W.A.T. is a club that is open to all Roanoke College students, especially those interested in Health and Human Performance. S.W.A.T. stands for Student Wellness Awareness Team, and has the following mission:
The mission of S.W.A.T. is to promote physical activity and behaviors that support healthy living and wellness within the Roanoke College community, and eventually the local Salem community. We plan to raise funds to support the Roanoke Valley Greenways. Possible activities include Midnight Madness, Glow-in-the-Dark volleyball, and an annual 5K Fun Run/Walk.
Those in the Athletic Training major meet once a semester with others in the allied health care profession to discuss current literature and issues in the Sports Medicine field. Orthopedic surgeons, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Medical Residents have been in attendance for meetings. Students have a chance to experience different perspectives on technique, safety, evaluations, and other valuable tools.
Dr. Elizabeth Holbrook and two of her students set out this fall to find ways to improve healthy habits for residents in Roanoke's West End community. Their suggestions could be incorporated into a city revitalization plan for the area.
