Internships

Many students expand their knowledge and skill sets in the field of applied history through internship experiences off campus.

Oxford Study Program

Students have a unique opportunity to study literature, history, and society during the summer at St. Anne's College, University of Oxford in England.

Sixteenth Century Journal

History majors have the opportunity to receive experience with publishing in the book review office for this prestigious academic publication.

Simulations & Lectures

Students participate in simulated civil war exercises and frequent role-playing experiments in many courses. They also help coordinate and implement the College's annual Founders Day celebrations.

Roanoke College in Germany

History majors have the opportunity to study in Wittenberg, Germany with Dr. Rob Willingham from Roanoke College, and other German professors. The program will examine the experience of modern Germany from the Lutheran Reformation to the reunification of Germany after the opening of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Program at Roanoke College is a grant program that enables qualified students to conduct intensive, independent research for eight to twelve weeks during the summer.

Undergraduate Research Assistants Program (URAP)

URAP is a program unique to Roanoke College where students work as research assistants with a member of the Roanoke College faculty on an original research project of interest to both the URAP scholar and to the faculty mentor.

Departmental Honors Projects

Qualified students may apply for honors in the major by completing an honors project consisting of a program of independent study culminating in a paper, artistic creation, or performance.

Student Assistants

Every year the History department hires approximately ten students to serve as assistants for the department at large and individual faculty members. The duties of our student assistants range from clerical support to assisting with historical society events and other official department receptions.

Independent study

Independent studies provide students with a practical application of their particular majors or more specialized study in a particular area.

Study Abroad

Roanoke College offers many study abroad programs that allow students to earn academic credit while outside the United States.

May Term

May Term is approximately a three week period during which students can participate in a wide array of Intensive Learning opportunities, including travel courses as well as on-campus courses.
