Senior Sociology majors have the option to take a seminar course that involves students working in groups to write a fundable grant for a local nonprofit agency. This year students completed grants for the Bradley Free Clinic, Court Appointed Special Advocates, Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition, and Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank.
Two of our grant proposals produced during the spring of 2008 in senior seminar were funded. A proposal to fund a childhood obesity prevention program was submitted by the Bradley Free Clinic. The agency was awarded 15,000 dollars by the Sharkey Family Foundation. The students who produced this particular proposal were Meredith Withers, Sade Younger, Rob Call, and Jangwon Yun.
The second proposal was submitted by the Roanoke Valley Cool Cities Coalition (RVCCC) to Roanoke Cement. They were awarded 12,000 dollars to measure the carbon footprints of Roanoke County and Salem. The students who worked on this proposal with RVCCC were Laura Hamilton, Leah Tirpak, and Alex Vardoulakis.
