What's Behind the Performance?
Dr. Elizabeth Bachelder, Fine Arts

The Kandinsky Trio has been ensemble-in-residence at Roanoke College for 18 years. Performing annually on their concert series at home and touring nationally, the Trio is an active performance organization with close ties to numerous performance venues and arts presenters. During the freshman year of training, the research assistant will learn to prepare press releases and other publicity materials, how to find information on specific compositions and composers, how to locate new or out-of-print resources, and how to write engagingly about music. A check-list detailing what information is needed and when will be developed for each performance/project. In the remaining years the URAP will be a liaison with the community, provide necessary background research for Trio programs, and assist in writing for various media while polishing communication skills with arts professionals.

What do Music, Love and Humor have in Common?
Dr. Christopher Buchholz, Psychology

In this project the research assistant will participate in an experiment collecting data on how individuals react emotionally to different songs. Analysis of the data will contribute to our understanding of how emotions are related to our psychological health and happiness.

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanophase Iron Oxides Using Spectroscopic Techniques
Dr. Richard Grant and Dr. Rama Balasubramanian, Math, Computer Science, and Physics

The proposed research will be carried out in two stages. First we must understand the corrosion properties of both synthetically produced and naturally weathered oxides and second, develop adherent protective coatings using chemical and surface processing techniques. The experimental techniques used to perform the research will include using the facilities on campus as well as at larger research institutions.

Lutheran Studies
Dr. Paul R. Hinlicky, Religion and Philosophy

The student researcher needs to have a high school level ability to read Latin. We would spend an initial year reading Latin texts together to get the student up to speed in comprehension. Then for the next three years I would assign texts for the student to research and report on and sometimes to translate. I would use this material in my own writing projects, giving due credit to the student's work. While the emphasis would be on primary texts in the original language, I would also use the research student to do bibliographical work, proof-reading and other academic chores involved in my writing projects. I could also on occasion use the research assistant as a guest lecturer in my classes and bring him or her to academic conferences.

Interactive Visual Information Systems
Dr. Stephen Hughes, Math, Computer Science, and Physics

Visualization can harness the power of the human perceptual system to quickly decode large amounts of data. This research explores novel interactive computer graphics methods to reason about and efficiently communicate our ideas.

Analysis of the Effect of Taking College-Level Introductory Courses on the Bible on Students' Religious Commitment
Dr. Jennifer Berenson Maclean, Religion and Philosophy

How does taking a college course on the Bible affect a student's faith? In this project the research assistant will assist Dr. Maclean with research leading to the creation, implementation, and analysis of surveys designed to assess this interesting question.

Separation and Purification of Boron Compounds by Preparative HPLC
Dr. Vernon R. Miller, Chemistry

Over the past several years Roanoke students have studied the synthesis of a number of boron cations. Before publishing, some of the compounds need to be separated and purified. This research will use high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to prepare pure samples for better characterization.

Calculus Textbook Development
Dr. Roland Minton, Math, Computer Science, and Physics

In this project, the student will participate in the revision of a calculus textbook. Activities will be chosen to reflect the student's background and interests. The student will compare aspects of the textbook under revision and some of its competitors, focusing on effective examples and exercises. As the project progresses, the student will develop application problems in areas of interest to the student. Learn more about this project.
