Section 5 - Student Organizations

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, RECOGNITION OF

I. PROCEDURES:

•A. A group will become a recognized student organization upon completing the following requirements and procedures:
1. Hold interest meeting(s) to attract students who might wish to join the organization. The Colket Center can assist you in planning and promoting your meeting(s).

2. Compile a list of potential members of the organization. The number of members should be sufficient to accomplish the mission of the organization and ensure the organization will continue as an on-going entity with a minimum number of six (6) students.
3. Secure a member of the faculty or staff who will serve as adviser to your organization.
4. Write and pass a constitution under which your organization will operate. This constitution should contain the following:

 

a. Name

b. Purpose

c. Membership

d. Meeting information

e. Officer selection and duties

f. Funding

g. How to amend

The stated purpose and goals of the organization must be consistent with the College's mission, purpose, goals and values. A sample constitution is available from the Colket Center.

•II. RECOGNITION PROCESS:

A. The membership list, faculty/staff adviser, proposed constitution, and a report on how financial matters are to be handled and how budget needs are to be met must be submitted to the Colket Center. All sources of outside funding must be disclosed. This information will be submitted to the Student Government Association (SGA) for its review. A member of the forming organization will be required to attend the SGA meeting where the group's application for recognition will be discussed.

B. Upon receiving SGA's recommendation, the organization's request for recognition shall be reviewed by the Student Life Council.

C. If approved by Student Life Council, the recommendation is submitted for final approval to the Vice President-Student Affairs.

•III. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR ORGANIZATIONS:

A. Membership in all organizations must be open to any member of the Roanoke College community who is willing to subscribe to the stated aims and meet the stated obligations of the organization. Membership in student organizations is limited to Roanoke College students, faculty and staff. Single-sex organizations such as those organizations affiliated with a national fraternity or sorority or a sports club, are exempt from the open membership requirement. Certain college-sponsored honorary organizations have selective criteria for membership.

B. Recognized student organizations are entitled to:

1. Reserve and use college facilities and services

2. Use the campus mail services for distributing notices and

flyers

3. Use college bulletin boards

4. Use the Roanoke College name (see license agreement)

5. Use an organizational post office box (if available)

6. Maintain an on-campus account for organizational funds

7. Use the college's tax-exempt status for purchases

8. Sponsor fund raising activities on campus

9. Use the college's business license for resale of items

10. Buy wholesale products through the college bookstore

11. To petition Student Life Council for access to student activity

12. To use college disk space, set up a web site and have an e-mail account

13. Establish a "Blackboard" account with the College's Information Technology Office.

•C. Responsibilities of Student Organizations

1. Register with the Colket Center each term.

2. Inform the Colket Center of changes in organization leadership in a timely manner.

3. Remain in good standing with the college.

4. Operate in a manner consistent with mission of Roanoke College and the organization's statement of purpose.

5. Have on file a current constitution, list of officers, membership roster, and faculty or staff adviser.

6. Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws and regulations, and the Roanoke College Conduct Code.

7. Follow all College and departmental policies and procedures.

8. Manage College resources wisely, ethically, and according to College and department guidelines.

9. Provide adequate lead-time when services are needed from College departments.

10. Consult with the Colket Center staff and other appropriate departments when large, unusual, or potentially risky events are planned.

11. Ensure continuity from year to year by training new leaders and keeping good records.

12. Have at least one advisor who is a member of the Roanoke College faculty or staff.

•D. All recognized organizations are subject to the following conditions:

1. Funding - organizations may petition the Student Life Council for use of student activity funds. Approval of such funds will, generally speaking, be granted for operating expenses and/or for events and activities directly or indirectly benefiting the entire student body. Budgets should be submitted in the fall for funding the following academic year.

2. Registration - organizations must register with the Colket Center by providing that office with the names and titles of the officers and a membership roster for the upcoming term. Any group failing to do so may be dropped as a recognized student organization and forfeit all rights and privileges granted through college recognition. Departmental organizations and individuals in those organizations who participate in scholarly activities may receive funding from the Dean of the College.

ALPHA KAPPA PSI

A nationally recognized professional business fraternity, the Nu Tau Chapter of Roanoke College was founded in 1991. Membership to Alpha Kappa Psi is available to students majoring in Business Administration and Economics. The organization holds weekly meetings, consisting of business oriented speakers, social gatherings, and tours of local businesses. This organization creates great networks between students and local businesses.

AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY; STUDENT AFFILIATES

The American Chemical Society is available to students of chemistry, biochemistry and related subjects through membership as Student Affiliates. The activities of the chapter consist of regularly scheduled meetings, featuring speakers from industry and other academic institutions, field trips, and social events.

ASSOCIATION FOR COMPUTING MACHINERY, ROANOKE COLLEGE STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the world's leading organization in information technology and computing. The Roanoke College Student Chapter of ACM (RCSCACM) sponsors computer science related activities, programs, and social events. Students interested in computer science are encouraged to join.

ASTRONOMY AT RC (ARC)

ARC seeks to raise campus awareness concerning the vast and awe-inspiring nature of the Universe. This is primarily accomplished through bi-weekly, discussion pizza-lunches and night telescope observing, and occasional campus-wide events. ARC also partners with other astronomy organizations in the Roanoke Valley to enjoy the Heavens and educate K-12 students. ARC is an interest-driven group and is open to all RC students.

COLLEGE CHOIR, THE

The College Choir presents concerts of sacred and secular music throughout the year. Under the direction of Prof. Jeffrey Sandborg, the group devotes itself to a serious study of the finest choral literature, and the highest possible standards are maintained. Academic credit is granted.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Founded in 1875 by the college's first president, David F. Bittle, the society is the oldest student organization on campus. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to join. The society plans outings to historical sites, hosts films and speakers, and sponsors socials two or three times a year. Contact any History Department faculty member in the Courthouse for further information.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE, RC

The Roanoke College Jazz Ensemble is devoted to the performance of the finest literature written for the large jazz ensemble (also known as Big Band Jazz). Arrangements ranging in style from Count Basie to Charles Mingus and beyond are featured. Student arrangements are encouraged. Ample Opportunities for improvisation and interaction with members of the local jazz scene are provided. Academic credit is available. Contact Dr. Joseph Blaha for more information.

MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, STUDENT CHAPTER

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest organization focusing on undergraduate mathematics. The purpose of this student chapter is to promote the interest in and the employment of mathematics at Roanoke College. The primary objective is to expose the organization's members to diverse areas of mathematics and related topics through sponsored meetings, talks, and activities. Membership is open to all students at Roanoke College.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

The primary goal of the organization is to foster greater knowledge of United Nations' activities and international affairs in general. In addition, members attend simulations at other schools and may also sponsor its own simulations at Roanoke College. Such participation will expand awareness within the college community of international organizations, the United Nations in particular. Membership is open to any student.

MU BETA PSI

Mu Beta Psi is one of the nation's oldest musical fraternities. Founded on the campus of North Carolina State University in November 1925, the fraternity has grown and matured through the addition of each new chapter. The fraternity is a group of men and women from many places with many interests, but with one thing in common - a love for music. By not requiring brothers to be music majors, Mu Beta Psi provides a unique opportunity for many students with an active interest in music to work together both musically and socially.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS SOCIETY

The Public Affairs Society is an organization for Criminal Justice, International Relations and Political Science students and other students interested in Public Affairs. The society sponsors both academic and co-curricular events.

ROANOKE COLLEGE STUDENT CHAPTER OF THE MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest organization focusing on undergraduate mathematics. The purpose of this student chapter is to promote the interest in and the enjoyment of mathematics at Roanoke College. The primary objective is to expose the organization's members to diverse areas of mathematics and related topics through sponsored meetings, talks, and activities. Membership is open to all students at Roanoke College.

SOCIETY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The mission of the Roanoke Valley Student Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management is to facilitate the professional growth of human resource management students, provide networking assistance, and offer service opportunities for today's students and tomorrow's leaders. Students interested in human resource management and in this group should contact Dr. Julie Lyon.

SOCIETY OF PHYSICS STUDENTS, THE

The Society of Physics Students is a national organization that promotes educational activities for all students interested in physics. Any student or faculty member with an interest in physics may join.

STUDENT WELLNESS AWARENESS TEAM (S.W.A.T.)

S.W.A.T. is a club that is open to all Roanoke College students but especially those interested in Health and Human Performance. The mission of S.W.A.T. is to promote healthy living within the Roanoke College community by providing activity opportunities and awareness events. S.W.A.T. plans to continue with events like Midnight Madness and Glow in the Dark Volleyball and is also adding a blood drive and a 5K running race.

WIND ENSEMBLE, THE

The Roanoke College Wind Ensemble is open to all students who have participated in their former school's concert band. Under the direction of Asst. Prof. Joseph Blaha, repertoire performed throughout the year is chosen from the master works of the wind band literature. Arrangements (some especially written for this ensemble) of important compositions for other media are also performed. Academic credit is available. Contact Dr. Blaha for more information.

The following are the college's honor organizations and all have specific criteria for membership. A high degree of excellence in certain fields will bring you the distinction of invitational membership into one or more of these honorary fraternities. ALPHA CHI*

Induction into Alpha Chi is one of the highest academic honor bestowed upon scholars at Roanoke College. It is a national college scholarship society dedicated to the stimulation of sound scholarship and devotion to the truth. The selection of its members is the responsibility of the faculty of Roanoke College subject to the minimal requirements as set forth by the Alpha Chi constitution. You must be a junior with a 3.8 average or a senior with a 3.5 average and be of good character.

If you are a transfer student, your entire academic record is considered and if the grades from the previous institution are higher than the grades at Roanoke College, then only those grades from Roanoke College are used in computing the average. Also, you must have earned at least nine units at Roanoke College.

ALPHA EPSILON DELTA

AED is an honor society and service organization for students preparing for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine among others. Its objectives include encouraging excellence in pre-medical scholarship, cultivating an appreciation of the importance of undergraduate education in health careers, binding similarly interested students and community service. AED was installed at Roanoke College on Sunday, April 18, 2010.

 

ALPHA KAPPA DELTA*

Eta Chapter's purpose is to reward excellence in sociology and to promote research in social problems and activities leading to human welfare. To be eligible for membership in the National Sociology Honorary Society, you must be a junior or senior, have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and at least a 3.0 GPA in no fewer than four sociology courses.

ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA*

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honorary fraternity for freshmen whose grade point average is at least 3.5 for the first semester. It awards graduate fellowships and senior certificates to deserving members.

ALPHA PHI SIGMA*

Alpha Phi Sigma is a nationally recognized honor society for Criminal Justice students. To be eligible for Roanoke College's Eta Omega chapter, students must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and at least a 3.2 grade point average in at least four criminal justice courses and be in the top 35 % of their class.

ALPHA PSI OMEGA

Alpha Psi Omega is a national honorary dramatics theatre fraternity whose purpose is to recognize and reward all phases of student participation in college theatrical productions. You are not required to be a theater major to be tapped into the organization. The Gamma Psi Cast of Roanoke College is proud to sponsor all student-run productions. This enables students to direct, produce, and design their own shows, as well as act in them.

BETA BETA BETA

The Eta Eta Chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Society was established at Roanoke College in 1957. Active members are men and women who are making the study of biology one of their major interests. To be eligible for election to active membership, you must have completed at least three courses in biology with an average of B or better. Students ineligible for active membership may join as associate, non-voting members.

DELTA MU DELTA*

The Epsilon Chapter of Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society recognizes and rewards superior scholastic achievement of the students of Business Administration. The purpose of Delta Mu Delta is twofold:

1. To promote higher scholarship in training for business

2. To recognize and reward scholastic attainment in business subjects.
To be eligible for election to membership, you must be pursuing the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, must have completed at least half of the work required for the degree, and must have achieved a 3.2 GPA. Further, you must be selected from the top 20% of the total class.

IOTA SIGMA PI

Iota Sigma Pi is a national honor society for women in chemistry. Its major objectives are: to promote interest in chemistry among women students, to foster mutual advancement in academic, business, and social life, and to stimulate personal accomplishment in chemical fields. Students must be juniors or above, with a 3.0 GPA, and meet additional coursework requirements for membership.

KAPPA DELTA PI

Kappa Delta Pi is an international honor society that recognizes excellence in scholarship and a commitment to the teaching profession. Candidates for membership must have a 3.0 grade point average, evidence of leadership attributes and the intention to continue in the field of education.

OMICRON DELTA EPSILON*

To be admitted to the Virginia Delta Chapter in economics, you must have four units in economics, a cumulative GPA of 3.0, and a minimum average of 3.0 in economics.

OMICRON DELTA KAPPA

ODK is a national leadership fraternity. Membership is by invitation, and the selection criteria are based on GPA, service, and campus leadership.

ORDER OF OMEGA

Order of Omega is a national honor society that recognizes the achievements of students inside and outside of the classroom that are in Greek affiliated organizations. The organization's purpose is to recognize those students who have attained a high standard of leadership in Greek activities and high academic success.

PHI ALPHA THETA*

The purpose of the Upsilon Omega Chapter is to encourage and recognize excellence in the study of history. To be eligible for membership, you must have at least junior standing, rank in the upper 35 percent of your class, have at least four full units of history, have an average of better than "B" in all history courses, and have an average of "B" or better in two-thirds of the remainder of all academic work.

PHI BETA KAPPA

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization, was founded at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg in 1776. The first society to have a Greek letter name, Phi Beta Kappa has more than a half-million members across the country. The society's emblem, a gold key, is recognized as a symbol of academic achievement. The pointing finger and three stars on the key symbolize the ambition of young scholars and the three distinguishing principles of Phi Beta Kappa; learning, morality and friendship.

To be nominated, students must be candidates for a bachelor's degree, majoring in arts and sciences and with at least 75% of their course work in liberal arts areas, at minimum passed the intermediate level of a foreign language, and have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement.

PHI LAMBDA UPSILON

A national honor society for students in chemical and biochemical sciences. The aims and purposes of Phi Lambda Upsilon are the promotion of high scholarship and original investigation in all branches of pure and applied chemistry. Students must have a 3.5 GPA and meet additional coursework requirements to be nominated for membership.

PHI SIGMA TAU*

Phi Sigma Tau is a national honor society for students with high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy. Candidates for membership must have completed three semesters, rank in the upper thirty-five percent of their class, and have completed at least two courses in philosophy courses completed.

PI DELTA PHI*

The purpose of the National French Honor Society is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and literature. To be eligible for membership, you must rank in the upper 35 percent of the class, as well as have at least a "B" average in no fewer than five French courses, including one in French literature.

PI MU EPSILON

Pi Mu Epsilon is a national honor society whose purpose is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics. Candidates eligible for membership in the Virginia Delta Chapter at Roanoke College must (1) have at least junior standing, be in the top one-third of the class, and have completed at least two years of major-level mathematics classes with a "B" average; or (2) be a sophomore in the top quarter of the class who is majoring in mathematics and has completed at least three semesters of major-level mathematics with a straight "A" average.

PI SIGMA ALPHA*

The purpose of the Eta Psi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, is to encourage and recognize excellence in the study of political science, public administration, government, and international relations as well as to promote worthwhile extracurricular activities related to public affairs. To be eligible for membership, you must have at least junior standing, rank in the upper third of your class, have at least three units in political science, and have an average of at least "B" in all political science courses.

PSI CHI*

Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology founded for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining scholarship in, and advancing the science of, psychology. To be eligible for membership, you must rank in the upper 35 percent of your class, have declared a major in psychology, and have at least a "B" average in no fewer than four psychology courses.

SIGMA DELTA PI*

Kappa Eta Chapter of the National Honor Society in Spanish recognizes outstanding scholarship in the Spanish language, literature, and culture. To be eligible for membership, you must rank in the upper 35 percent of the class and have at least a "B" average in no fewer than five Spanish courses (including one in Spanish literature).

SIGMA PI SIGMA*

Sigma Pi Sigma is the National Physics Honor Society whose purpose is to recognize outstanding scholarship in physics. To be eligible for membership, a student must be a member of SPS (The Society of Physics Students), have at least junior standing, be ranked in the top third of their class, and have excelled in at least two years of major-level physics courses.

SIGMA TAU DELTA*

This national honor society recognizes superior achievement in English, language and literature.

THETA ALPHA KAPPA*

Theta Alpha Kappa is the National Honor Society for Religious and Theological Studies. The Greek letters reflect the understanding that theos (god), anthropos (human), and koinonia (community) are the focal points for the study of religion and theology. Students must have completed at least 3 semesters at Roanoke College, completed at least 4 courses in Religion/Theology, attained at least a 3.7 GPA in Religion/Theology, and an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and standing in the upper 35% of one's class.

XI THETA CHI

The Honorary Language Fraternity was founded for the purpose of fostering an interest in the culture, life, and literature of other peoples. Membership by invitation is extended to those students who excel in language courses and are in good standing with the college.

A nationally recognized co-educational service fraternity, our local chapter was recognized by the college in the fall of 1987.

ALPHA SIGMA ALPHA (ΑΣΑ)

A women's national social fraternity, the Roanoke College chapter was founded in 2001.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

Amnesty International is a collegiate chapter of the international organization. Amnesty International is an independent, worldwide movement working impartially for the release of all prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for political prisoners, and the abolition of torture and executions under all circumstances. It is independent of any political, ideological, or religious affiliations, and is funded by donations from its members and supporters around the world.

ANIME CLUB

Anime Club is devoted to fans of this genre. A favorite annual event is Pirates vs. Ninjas.

ASTRONOMY CLUB

Look to the heavens! The Astronomy Club keeps its eyes on the sky.

BAPTIST COLLEGIATE MINISTRY

Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) at Roanoke College offers students opportunities for both on campus small groups for Bible Study and Community and off campus large group meetings for exciting Worship and Fellowship.

BEST BUDDIES

Best Buddies was recognized by the College in 1997. Members of this chapter work with local handicapped persons with disabilities.

BLACK STUDENT ALLIANCE, (BSA)

The purpose of the BSA shall be to promote diversity, to uplift and support culture, to promote unity, and to provide support for black students. Its primary function is to help students with adjustments they may face by attending a predominantly white college. We are dedicated to representing and protecting the interests of black students on campus as well as the surrounding community. We hope to increase awareness of black student contributions, issues and ideas.

BRACKETY-ACK, THE

The Brackety-Ack, the student newspaper, got its name as a result of a contest offering a one-year's subscription for the best name submitted. It was begun in 1915 and is published on a weekly basis during the school year. The entire staff, from editor-in-chief to cub reporter, is composed of students. Editorial and sales positions, along with writing and proofreading positions, are always available. The Brackety-Ack is located in the Student Organizations Office on the second floor of the Colket Center. CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD (CAB)

Who's THE CAMPUS ACTIVITIES BOARD? You are! Everyone at Roanoke College may be a member of this organization. CAB is responsible for producing the majority of the entertainment on campus. Traditional events sponsored by the board include: Welcome Back Weekend, the Family Weekend Show, WinterFest, and Spring Fling. Other events include One Nite Stands, concerts, and Movies on the Quad, to name but a few. Take part in planning your own fun and entertainment - become a member!

Mission: The Campus Activities Board is responsible for the coordination of the activities and scheduling of events by its constituent student organizations within the context of the college's activities calendar. CAB may assist, co-sponsor, or subsidize constituent organizations or independently produce its own activities. These activities may stand-alone or be combined to create a series of programs or festivals. All of the events produced, sponsored, or supported by the Campus Activities Board should be consistent with the mission of the college. CAB activities are required to be approved by the Vice President - Student Affairs or his agents. Funding: The Campus Activities Board derives its operating funds from the Student Life Council and ultimately from the college's annual budget. Thus, the college assumes direct responsibility for the contracts and services purchased by the Campus Activities Board.

Membership: Any full-time or part-time student may be a member of a Campus Activities Board committee. All students are eligible to hold an executive office.
The programming committees of CAB are: One Nite Stand Committee, Mainstage Committee, RC Films, RC Expanded, Special Events Committee and Poster Committee. If you're interested in joining, stop by the Colket Center or contact them at CAB@roanoke.edu.

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY

Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) exists to build community rooted in Christ that fosters Catholic ideals, friendships, education, and spiritual growth. Catholic Mass is held every Sunday in the Antrim Chapel. Dinner is served immediately following. CCM also sponsors Retreats each semester and programs each week.

CHI OMEGA (ΧΩ)

A women's national social fraternity, Pi Epsilon Chapter was founded in 1955.

COLLEGE DEMOCRATS

This organization's major objective is to stimulate interest in Democratic Party politics. Membership is open to all student Democrats and the organization can be contacted through campus mail. This group is inactive at this time.

COMMUTER CONNECTIONS

This club was founded in 2007 to benefit our commuting student population.

DANCE TEAM

The Dance Team performs at selected campus events and competes against other dance teams in the mid-Atlantic region.

DELTA GAMMA (ΔΓ)

A women's national social fraternity, Gamma Pi Chapter was founded in 1955. This fraternity can be contacted through email at: dgamma@roanoke.edu.

DELTA SIGMA THETA

A women's national social fraternity, the local chapter was founded in 2006.

EARTHBOUND

Earthbound is a student organization with a primary purpose of educating the college community on environmental topics. Its motto is "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Reject, Replant." You can find out more about Earthbound in the Colket Center.

EQUESTRIAN CLUB

The Equestrian Club, a club sport, provides opportunities for recreational and competitive riding.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

The Roanoke College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity works on a variety of projects aimed at providing decent housing for God's people in need. The chapter works with the Roanoke Valley affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International on local fund-raising and building projects. The chapter also sponsors a Spring Break Habitat trip to South Carolina to build houses for low-income families. Paul Henrickson, Chaplain, serves as the group's adviser. HILLEL

A Jewish organization affiliated with Hillel, The National Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. The purpose is to provide a place for all students to understand the many different cultures and aspects of Judaism. It holds open celebrations, discussions and weekly meetings, as well as providing access to local synagogues, Beth Israel and Temple Emmanuel.

HOCKEY CLUB

A recognized club sport, the Hockey Club participates in the Roanoke Valley Adult Hockey Association and plays its games at the Ice Station located in Roanoke.

HISPANIC ORGANIZATION FOR LEADERSHIP AND ACHIEVEMENT, (H.O.L.A.)

The purpose of HOLA is to promote cultural appreciation and understanding of Spanish speaking cultures and to promote leadership and achievement among Hispanic students at Roanoke College.

INTER-FRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC)

IFC is the governing body for the men's social fraternities. Members from each fraternity sit on the council and determine policies for the fraternities, especially the areas of rushing and pledging. Each of the men's fraternities is nationally recognized. IFC is represented on the Student Government Association Senate and can be contacted through campus mail. INTERVARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP; (IVCF)

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship_® is a student led organization who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture and God's purposes in the world. IVCF gathers for daily small group Bible study, fellowship, and retreats during the semesters. IVCF comes together weekly for Large Group worship and featured speaker every Thursday @ 8:00 PM in the Pickle Lounge of the Colket Center.

KAPPA ALPHA (ΚΑ)

The Beta Rho chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order is a men's national social fraternity. Our local chapter was established in 1924 and re-chartered as an active chapter of the national fraternity on April 8, 1988.

LAMBDA ALLIANCE

The Lambda Alliance is an organization that encourages the acceptance of sexual diversity, offers a safe environment to discuss issues involving sexuality, and educates people about different sexual orientations, while trying to alleviate fears and prejudices.

LOOKING FOR AN ECHO

This a cappella men's singing group was founded in 1996. Why are they looking for an echo? There is a sound that all choirs strive for, a moment when all voices bend and sound as one, a single instant of perfection when sound becomes something more than sound. Each member of the group is a firm believer in this sound and in every performance they search for it.

LUTHERAN STUDENT MOVEMENT

Lutheran Student Movement (LSM) is an organization of Lutheran Students for Worship, service, and fellowship. LSM meets on Wednesday at 8 PM in the Antrim Chapel.

MAINSTAGE COMMITTEE

This committee is a programming committee of CAB. It produces campus events such as concerts, comedy shows, and festivals. It has the responsibility to produce the Family Weekend Show and Spring Fling. Past events include Blues Traveler, Craig Karges, the Spin Doctors, Joan Osborne, John Mayer, O.A.R., and Kanye West. MAINSTREET

This women's a cappella singing group was founded in 1999. All performers are students at the college.

MEN'S CLUB LACROSSE

Men's Club Lacrosse is a member of the National Club Lacrosse League and competes against other club teams in Virginia.

MEN'S CLUB SOCCER

Men's Club Soccer competes against other club teams in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region.

ONE NITE STAND COMMITTEE

The One Nite Stand Committee is a programming committee of CAB. The members of this committee produce student variety and musical shows. Professional comedians are brought to campus in either a nightclub or coffeehouse setting, as are professional musicians.

ON CONCEPT'S EDGE

On Concept's Edge is the campus literary magazine published yearly by students like you. It contains poetry, prose, drawings, and photography by other students as well as faculty and staff. If you're interested in joining the staff or contributing to this publication, contact the organization via its email account or through campus mail.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES CLUB

The OA Club provides opportunities for students to safely engage in a variety of outdoor experiences while developing the skills necessary to enjoy the activity and learn more about the natural environment. OA offers regular outings in the following areas: biking, climbing, hiking/backpacking, paddling and skiing/snowboarding.

PANHELLENIC COUNCIL (PHC)

Panhellenic Council is the governing council for the women's fraternities. Three delegates represent each fraternity on the council. Panhellenic Council is a member organization of the Student Government Association. See: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Phi Mu, Rush

PHI MU (ΦΜ)

A women's national social fraternity, Gamma Eta Chapter was founded in 1955.

PI KAPPA ALPHA (ΠΚΑ)

A men's national social fraternity, Phi chapter was re-colonized and chartered at Roanoke College in 2000.

PI KAPPA PHI (ΠΚΦ)

A men's national social fraternity, Xi chapter was re-colonized at Roanoke College in 2004 and hopes to be chartered in Fall Term 2005.

QUIZ BOWL TEAM

Quiz Bowl is an inter-collegiate competition of the mind! It's a quick response questions and answer format game that is played in teams. Each year, the College Bowl team sponsors a campus competition with prizes awarded to the winning teams. An "all-star" team is selected to compete against other schools in a regional tournament.

RUGBY CLUB

The players on the Rugby Club compete among themselves and against other local clubs.

SHADES OF MAROON

Roanoke College students are representative of many backgrounds. Members of Shades present diversity issues and support minority students through programs and activities.

SIGMA CHI (ΣΧ)

A men's national social fraternity, Tau Chapter was originally founded in 1872 and revived in 1923.

SPIRIT TEAM

The Spirit Team entertains and promotes sports and other campus events. The Spirit Team is comprised of Rooney, the mascot, his handlers, the cheerleaders, pep band, and our student booster club, the Manic Maroonz. Catch the Maroon Spirit - GO MAROONS!

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION (SGA)

The Student Government Association of Roanoke College exists under the authority of the Board of Trustees and its designated Executive Officers. The SGA's purpose is to support the mission of the institution and uphold the college's standards of honesty, respect, and personal responsibility. This purpose is achieved by advising faculty, administrators and trustees about matters of concern to students and promoting scholarship, service, leadership, and citizenship among the student body. Students are members of numerous bodies, including the Board of Trustees' College Life Committee, Academic Integrity Council, College Conduct Board, Student Conduct Council, Resources and Planning Council, Curriculum Committee, and Student Life Council. The President of the Student Body is invited as a student observer to meetings of the Board of Trustees and of the faculty. There are many opportunities for students to become involved in the SGA. STUDENT WELLNESS ACTION TEAM (SWAT)

SWAT's purpose is to be an advocate for healthy living through physical activity and healthy behaviors.

TECH CREW

Employed by the Colket Center, this group of students works many of the Campus Activities Board and other student organizations' shows. Their responsibilities include performing stage crew functions, assisting entertainers, operating soundboards and stage lights, and running movie projectors. If you are interested in joining this crew, complete an application which may be found at the Colket Center Information Desk.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE CLUB

UFC members practice on a regular basis to improve their skills for competitions against other clubs in the mid-Atlantic region.

WARHAMMER CLUB

Founded in 2007, the Warhammer Club holds occasional tournaments in conflict simulation.

WOMEN'S CLUB SOCCER

Women's Club Soccer competes against other club teams in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region.

WOMEN'S ULTIMATE CLUB

The Women's Ultimate Club competes against other schools in the South and Mid-Atlantic regions.

WRKE-LPFM

A student organized and run activity, the campus radio station broadcasts over 100.3 FM and the World Wide Web. Contact the Colket Center or come by the station on the second floor of the Colket Center for more information.

The purpose of Young Life is to introduce local adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith.
