Distributed by campus e-mail at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011:
As communicated earlier, at approximately 12 noon today there was a shooting on the Virginia Tech campus. One police officer and one other individual is confirmed dead. The other individual has been identified as a male, and a weapon was found in the vicinity. No other incidents have taken place since the incidents earlier this afternoon. Authorities at Virginia Tech have lifted the shelter in place order for the VT campus, and the institution is attempting to return to normal activity.
We are grateful that this crisis appears to be reaching a conclusion. We again extend our thoughts and prayers to the students, faculty and staff at Virginia Tech, and in particular to the family of the police officer that was killed in the line of duty.
At times like this, it is natural for family and friends to be concerned about each other. Students are encouraged to contact their family and reassure them of your safety and well-being.
Please be reminded, that should an emergency occur on the Roanoke College campus, a Maroon Alert would be issued instructing the campus community on what actions they should take. To sign up for Maroon Alerts go to http://www.roanoke.edu/maroonalerts.
