Roanoke College Professor Publishes Tenth Book
SALEM, Va. — Concordia Publishing House has released a new book by a Roanoke College professor, Dr. Robert Benne, that examines ethics in the Lutheran tradition and how they might apply to a number of different contemporary issues.
Benne, the College’s director of the Center for Religion and Society, has written his tenth book, Reasonable Ethics: A Christian Approach to Social, Economic, and Political Concerns. This book shows how a classical appropriation of Lutheran theology and ethics might influence convictions on cultural, economic, political, and ecclesial matters.
In Reasonable Ethics, Benne begins with autobiographical material, moves through core Lutheran theological and ethical teachings, and then applies them to such varied topics as sports, movies, Christian higher education, religion and politics, sexual ethics, and music. This new book shows how one Christian moves from core beliefs to perspectives on controversial issues about which Christians of good will and intelligence can certainly disagree.
Benne is the Jordan-Trexler professor of religion (emeritus) at Roanoke College. He is a leading writer in Lutheran ethics and social thought. His other books include: Ordinary Saints: An Introduction to the Christian Life, Paradoxical Vision: A Public Theology for the Twenty-First Century, Seeing is Believing: Visions of Life through Film, and Quality with Soul—How Six Premier Colleges and Universities Keep Faith with Their Christian Traditions.
Roanoke College, the country’s second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent, co-educational, four-year liberal arts college.
