Roanoke's Mike Bankert to participate in Journey of Hope
SALEM, VA - Mike Bankert '12 will be spending the summer biking cross-country in support of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity's national philanthropy, PUSH America. Beginning in June, Bankert will cycle through 32 states to spread a message of acceptance and understanding for people with disabilities as part of the Journey of Hope.
A member of Pi Kappa Phi, Bankert has been involved in philanthropic efforts supporting PUSH America for the past three years. Inspired by his fraternity's efforts to raise money and awareness for the organization, Bankert took on the challenge of biking cross-country. "I've always wanted to travel," said Bankert. "Journey of Hope provides a great opportunity for service, and to see the country."
Participants are split into three teams, each of which is assigned a different route for the 12,000 mile journey. Teams bike approximately 75 miles per day, saving time to interact with local disabled people upon arrival at their destinations. The cyclists will depart from San Francisco and Seattle in June and conclude their journeys together in August at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
In order to participate, team members are required to raise a minimum of $5,000 for PUSH America. Annually, Journey of Hope raises more than $500,000 for people with disabilities.
