National law publication names Roanoke College professor a top Roanoke Valley lawyer of the year

Salem, Va.-Since its inception in 1983, "Best Lawyers" has named Bayard Harris one of the Roanoke Valley's top lawyers several times.

However, the 2012 edition of this national publication for the legal profession presents Harris, a Roanoke College instructor, with a more prestigious award. He was named Lawyer of the Year in labor law-management for the Roanoke Valley.

"Best Lawyers" is "the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession," according to its website. The publication has gained high respect in the legal profession because it recognizes different lawyers in each area and specialty on solely peer review.

"You contribute to the education, you contribute to the profession, and the reward is recognition by your peers," said Harris of the selection process for "Best Lawyers."

Harris has had a long and successful career in the Roanoke Valley. He practiced law at Woods Rogers PLC for 18 years before he opened his own firm, The Center for Employment Law, in 1991.

In 1996, Harris began teaching business law, labor relations and human resource management in Roanoke College's Business Department. In addition to teaching, Harris returned to Woods Rogers in 1998 as a member of the Labor and Employment Law Group.

Harris remains of counsel - or on call - at Woods Rogers, while he continues to teach at Roanoke College. Additionally, he founded and remains actively involved in Nathan's Gift Foundation, a non-profit youth education program created in memory of his son.

As for being named Lawyer of the Year, Harris said, "I think it is important because it is good for the college and the Business Department to have the students realize the quality of the faculty."
