Two students appointed to VFIC council

Salem, Va. - Two Roanoke students have been appointed to the Student Advisory Council for CAREER15. Valerie Maldonado, a junior criminal justice and political science major and Peter Holden, a junior economics and business major are Roanoke College's two representatives on the Student Advisory Council for CAREER15, a job placement network launched by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

Maldonado and Holden work with Toni McLawhorn in Career Services to develop advertising ideas to promote the services that CAREER15 offers Roanoke students. Their goal is to raise awareness of the networking site and its events on Campus. Their role on the Student Advisory Council of CAREER15 also allows them to provide the staff of CAREER15 with advice.

Maldonado and Holden plan to advertise CAREER15 and MaroonNet, Roanoke's private online job and internship site for Roanoke students and alumni access only, with magnets and outdoor signs around campus near academic buildings and residence halls. Additionally, CAREER15 promotional funds will be used to provide door prize opportunities for students attending the Internship Fair in late February.

In the past, financial institutions were the main employers using CAREER15 to hire college students-mostly business majors. CAREER15 aims to provide a variety of jobs so that more majors are being included. CAREER15 was launched in 2007 by the VFIC to give companies a cost-efficient and time-efficient way to connect with students enrolled at the 15 private colleges and universities in Virginia who are looking for jobs or internships.

Currently, over 100 employers and over 3,500 students are participating in CAREER15.

Roanoke College, a classic liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia, combines firsthand learning with valuable personal connections in a beautiful, undergraduate setting. Roanoke is one of just 280 colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review names Roanoke as one of the "best in the Southeast" and U.S. News & World Report includes Roanoke on its "Up-and-coming National Liberal Arts Colleges" list.
