  • President Michael Maxey is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Chris Bowen as Roanoke College's new Timothy L. Pickle Dean of the Chapel. Bowen will arrive at Roanoke on July 7. He succeeds the Rev. R. Paul Henrickson, who is retiring this summer after 30 years in this calling.

    Bowen has been an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2001. He is a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. where he majored in biology. Following graduation, he spent two years at North Carolina State University as a research assistant pursuing a doctorate in genetics before heeding the call to seminary. He graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C.

    Bowen served as a pastor in Lake Nebagamon, Wisc. before being called to pastor at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach. He has been with St. Michael Lutheran for nine years, first as associate pastor and since 2009, as senior pastor. 

    Roanoke College's Dean of the Chapel is a pastor to the total campus with responsibilities for students, faculty, and staff. The Chaplain offers worship experiences, spiritual and religious life programming, and service opportunities for members of the campus community. The role of the Chaplain also is central to the church-related identity of Roanoke and to the life of the campus.  Roanoke College is the second oldest Lutheran college in the nation. As part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American, Roanoke partnership relationships with the Virginia, Metro D. C., and West Virginia Synods of the ELCA.
