Roanoke College Named a "College of Distinction"
"This is a great honor for any college," explains Dr. Ruth McClelland-Nugent, chief editor for the publication. "The schools in this book are some of the very best in the country. Some are household names, some are 'hidden gems' what they all share is that they are all great places to get an education."
In order to qualify for inclusion, Roanoke College was evaluated for its performance in the Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Communities and Successful Outcomes. "These are areas that really matter to students," says McClelland-Nugent. Guidance counselors and admissions professionals around the country recommended Roanoke College highly in every category.
"Roanoke College is very pleased to be recognized by Colleges of Distinction. As a liberal arts college we take great pride in offering our students an education that prepares them not only for successful careers but also for meaningful lives. Our commitment to engaging students both inside and outside of the classroom helps them become well-educated and well-rounded individuals who are service minded and prepared to take leadership roles in their communities and professional lives. It is rewarding when our efforts are recognized not only by our alumni and friends but also by highly respected professionals in the field of education" said Dr. Sabine U. O'Hara, president of Roanoke College.
Roanoke College, the country's second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent, co-educational, four-year liberal arts college. Its 1,850 students represent Virginia and 41 states across the U.S., along with 25 foreign countries. The college offers 33 majors, including professional preparation in business and education and pre-professional programs in law, medicine, dentistry, engineering and ministry. The college is listed in U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges Guide as a national liberal arts college. Roanoke is one of just 270 colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society.
Roanoke College will be extensively profiled in the forthcoming book, Colleges of Distinction, which will be published later this year. It is also featured on the website www.collegesofdistinction.com.
