Roanoke College Choir, Oriana Singers to present last concert of the year

Don't miss the Roanoke College Choir and the Oriana Singers in the groups' last musical performances of this year.

The choir, orchestra and soloists will present George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" (and the "Hallelujah Chorus") and Antonio Vivaldi's "Gloria" in a concert at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Roanoke on Sunday Dec. 15.

There will be two performances, the first at 2:30 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m.

Handel's "Messiah" (and the "Hallelujah Chorus") is one of the most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Renowned soprano Elizabeth Futral will perform alongside the choir, orchestra and soloists.

Noted as one of her generation's best vocalists, Futral's rich and vibrant voice will captivate the stage and the audience. Futral made her debut at the New York City Opera in 1994 and has been making headlines ever since. As both an actress and singer, Futral has performed all over the United States as well as in Europe, New Zealand, South America and Japan. She has been praised for her unusual versatility between blending classical and contemporary music.

Roanoke College's Oriana Singers, an all-women's choir, also will perform with the orchestra and soloists. They will present Vivaldi's "Gloria" in its rarely heard treble version.

Roanoke College's Dr. Jeffrey Sandborg will conduct the holiday concert.

The Roanoke College Choir is the oldest vocal ensemble on campus. The group includes 55 auditioned singers, and each year the choir is praised for its innovative and beautiful musical renditions.

The Oriana Singers, founded in 2009, includes about 40 auditioned female singers who are known for their beautiful and diverse choral tones.

Sandborg has directed the Roanoke College Choir since 1985.
