Freshman Wins State Golf Tournament

ASHLAND, Va.--Roanoke College freshman Billy McDonald won the 2006 Virginia Division III state golf tournament, taking first with a two-under 142 at the Nansemond Golf Club. McDonald led the Maroons to a fourth place finish as a team, just eight strokes out of second place.

McDonald was in second place after the first day of action, carding a 72 on the par-72 course. He distanced himself from the field on the second day, shooting a 70, the only player to go under par. His closest competitor on the second day shot a 73, giving McDonald the three-stroke victory, his first as a college player.

As a team, the Maroons shot a 619, 314 on the first day, 305 on the second. The Maroons were in fifth place following day one, but shot the second best score on the second day to finish fourth. Chris Devine tied for 19th with a 156 (83-73), while Mark Ashby tied for 27th (77-81-158).
