Roanoke College Choir Opens the Holiday Season
SALEM, Va.- The Roanoke College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Sandborg, will present its 20th annual "Lessons and Carols of Christmas" Sunday, November 28 at 5 and 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, North Jefferson Street, Roanoke. The public is invited to attend at no charge, but a freewill offering will be taken to help support Roanoke Area Ministries.
This Roanoke seasonal tradition, begun by Sandborg in 1985 during his first year of tenure at Roanoke College, will include music by Andrea Gabrieli, Cristobal Morales, Michael Head, William Walton, George Chadwick and Herbert Howells.
The Roanoke College Choir is the largest performing and touring ensemble of Roanoke College. Comprised of 55 auditioned singers, the choir includes members who represent every academic discipline on campus. It is committed to performing the finest choral music of all styles.
In addition to frequent concert appearances in the greater Roanoke area and along the East Coast, the choir has been heard regularly with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. The choir's reputation in the area of choral improvisation has been earned with residencies and concerts with specialists such as Gunnar Eriksson and Ulrika Molin (Sweden), Roger Treece (United States) and Lone Larsen (Denmark).
The choir has been heard in concert in England, Scotland, Wales, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Italy and The Netherlands. In May 2004, the choir made a concert tour of Normandy, France, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Its well received recordings include Currents, A Babe is Born and Lit by a Star.
In addition to directing the Roanoke College choir, Sandborg directed the Roanoke Valley Choral Society for 13 years. Sandborg is active as a clinician, adjudicator, arranger and choral scholar. His instructional video, focusing on the fundamentals of singing, Make a Joyful and Beautiful Noise!, has been used widely as a teaching resource in North America and abroad. He is the author of English Ways: Interviews with English Choral Conductors. Sandborg holds the B.A. from Knox College (Illinois), the M.M. in voice and the D.M.A. in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
