Roanoke College open but High Street remains closed

  • Roanoke College open but High Street remains closed

  • 06/14/13
  • Update Tuesday, June 18:

High Street remains closed as electrical workers repair the damage from last Thursday's storm. Some of the repairs require several hours of clear weather and therefore it may be Thursday before power is restored to the entire campus and High Street can be reopened.

    Update Monday, June 17:

Roanoke College is open but High Street remains closed due to electrical damage from last Thursday's storm. The College hopes to have electrical contractors on campus today to begin the necessary repairs. Most available electric company crews are working to restore power to homes and are not yet available for our repairs. High Street will be closed today and possibly into Tuesday or Wednesday. The progress of repairs will be weather dependent as well.

Because of this, the Fowler Alumni House, Student Health Services, Chalmers, and the Chaplain's office do not have power. Staff members in those areas have relocated.

    • Career Services has relocated to the Fintel Library, inside the Center for Learning and Teaching.  If they are not available at their campus phone, Toni McLawhorn can be reached via cell at 540-353-2210.
    • Community Programs is set up in the Colket Center and Stephanie Garst can be reached via cell at 540-314-5029.
    • Sandy McGhee, director of student health services, is involved with Spring into Maroon today and can be reached by cell at 540-312-4325.

The College's facilities on Elizabeth Campus are also without power.

Update June 14: Roanoke College is open today, and Spring into Maroon is in full swing.

But High Street remains closed because of fallen trees from yesterday's storm.

    Update 11 am

Fintel Library now has power and is fully operational.

    Update June 13. 10:45 am

High Street is still closed for clean-up and repairs.

Another electric transformer has malfunctioned and parts of campus are still without power. Salem Electric is working on the problem and power was just restored to Colket, Olin, Roselawn and Sections, all of which lost power for some time this morning. We hope this will resolve power problems in those areas.

Fintel Library, Chalmers and the Fowler Alumni house are still without power. Some IT equipment is housed in these facilities so the outages may be impacting technology across campus in various ways. We appreciate your patience as everyone is working hard to resolve these issues and continue with the storm clean-up and repairs.

Trexler, Life Science and most buildings on the west side of campus do have power.

For your safety, please avoid the areas where lines are still down and the clean-up work is happening.
    Update June 13. 9:20 am

A severe thunderstorm went through campus Thursday afternoon. Power is out to much of the campus. High Street near Fintel Library is blocked due to a downed power line. Many tree limbs are down and crews are in the process of cleaning up at this time. The College closed around 3 pm Thursday due to the storm.

Spring into Maroon is still on for Friday. New Maroons and their families should plan to meet in Olin Hall between 8 and 8:30 am as regularly scheduled. The plans for the day may be adjusted based on the power situations on campus on Friday morning. If new students can't make it to campus safely, they can contact Admissions to reschedule or make alternate plans.
