Roanoke President Michael Maxey to receive honorary Doctor of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary
SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College President Michael C. Maxey will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina. The honor will be bestowed on Maxey during the Southern Seminary commencement exercises on May 15.
"I am deeply honored by this gesture, and I am grateful to Southern Seminary in so many ways," Maxey said.
In a letter informing Maxey of the honor, Southern Seminary President Marcus Miller said Maxey was selected for his exemplary service to Roanoke College. "We believe this degree will be an appropriate recognition of your vocation and our partnership with you and Roanoke College," Miller said.
"Mr. Maxey has served at Roanoke College for over 20 years in a variety of roles, but always an excellent Lutheran layman," The Rev. James F. Mauney, Bishop of the Virginia Synod, said. "He has served in many congregational positions at College Lutheran Church. Mr. Maxey has been a part of our synodical youth events, national youth events, synodical assemblies, task forces, and has been a constant consultant for me in my work as bishop since 1999."
Maxey has always viewed the College's relationship with the Lutheran church as mutually enhancing. A long-standing advocate, Maxey even praised the connections with Lutherans in his inaugural address. "The Reformation was born in a classroom with a professor, not in a church," Maxey said. "That is an encouraging heritage for an institution of higher learning.... Lutherans give us more than room to breathe, they give us breath."
Maxey became Roanoke's 11th president in 2007. At the time of his appointment, Maxey had been part of the Roanoke College community for 24 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Wake Forest University and a Master of Arts in education, counselor education, from Wake Forest. He also earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in counselor education at University of New Hampshire. He attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
