SALEM, VA-The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament with an 18-9 win over visiting Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday in Salem, VA. The Maroons improve to 15-4 on the season and for the third straight year tie a school record for wins in a season. The Battling Bishops have their season come to a close with a 12-4 overall mark. The Maroons travel to #1 Salisbury on Wednesday. The time of the quarterfinal game has not yet been determined.
The Bishops took an early 1-0 lead when Eric Turner was left alone on the crease and finished a Chris Eccles pass with13:38 showing on the clock. The Maroons, however, scored the game's next 11 goals and at halftime owned a 12-2 lead. The first four of the goals were unassisted goals with the Maroons scoring on four dodges from the wing. Jon Mason, who scored seven times to fall just one goal shy of tying his own NCAA postseason record, evened the score at one. Brendan Moore, Richard Fox, and Matt Duke all followed with unassisted goals.
Roanoke's first assist came with 5:45 left in the first quarter when senior Scott Lindberg finished a Pat March pass. By the time the first quarter ended the Maroons had scored eight times. Mason opened the second quarter with a man-up goal and March scored his first of the game, both on Zach Thomas assists and the Maroons led 11-1. After Mason scored his third man-up goal, off of a Moore bounce pass, OWU's Eric Turner scored an unassisted goal to break Roanoke's run.
The Battling Bishops controlled the entire third quarter, outshooting the Maroons 17-4, outscoring RC 5-0, and winning five of the six face-offs. The fifth of those five goals came off the crosse of Trevor Jones who finished an inside pass from Eccles. Heading into the fourth quarter the Maroon lead was trimmed to 12-7.
Roanoke got most of those goals back early in the fourth, with Chaz Carlson and March scoring the first two and Mason the next two. With 2:56 left OWU's Dave Castignola scored man-up, but the Maroons scored two of the final three to make the final 18-9.
Mason led all scorers with seven points on the seven goals. He tied his own school record with his 74th goal of the year and is one point away from tying Kris Davis' single-season school record point total of 91 Thomas tallied five points on a goal and a career-high four assists. Josh Rea won 10 of his 17 face-off attempts. Jake Dorsey made 11 saves in the game, four in the third.
Turner, Castignola, and Chris Ehlinger all had three points for OWU. Freshman Craig Aronoff went 7-for-13 on face-offs.
