Roanoke begins construction on new residence hall
SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College began construction on a new residence hall in late May. The residence hall will open to students in fall of 2012 and will enhance the development of the "Athletic Quad." Branch & Associates Inc., a Roanoke construction company, will be the general contractor for the project. The hall will reside on the site of the current parking lot for Caldwell Allegheny Ritter residence hall, near Kerr Stadium. The new parking lot on Hawthorn Road will be completed this summer and will replace the parking spaces lost to the construction. This $13 million project is registered to be certified as a LEED building and will be Roanoke's second following the completion of Lucas Hall in 2010.
LEED stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design," meaning that this construction project will be environmentally friendly in a number of ways incorporating features such as water saving plumbing fixtures, energy efficient heating and cooling system, materials with recycled content being used and energy efficient windows. This is another of Roanoke College's efforts to demonstrate environmental responsibility in its construction designs and practices.
The residence hall will measure about 65,000 square feet and will have more than 200 beds on four floors. It will provide a choice of three living spaces, with the options of apartment, semi-suite or POD living. The variety of spaces will allow students to progress to a more independent lifestyle as they advance from their first to upper class years. Apartment living will feature four single bedrooms with a common living room, kitchen and two bathrooms. The semi-suite living will include two bedrooms and a shared bathroom for four people. In the POD, 12 single rooms will surround and share a kitchen, a common area with a flat screen TV and bathrooms.
The new residence hall also will include a standard classroom, seminar room, small conference room and a faculty office. The hall will be outfitted with wireless computer networking throughout the building. This new residence hall will fully integrate the academic and residential campus environments and represent the state of the art in campus design.
