Orientation Update: New student events remain on schedule as Roanoke College monitors hurricane threat

Note: New Roanoke students should call the college's Admissions office at 540-375-2270 if hurricane conditions delay arrival for orientation.

Dr. Eugene Zdziarski, dean of students and vice president of student affairs at Roanoke College, sent the following letter this week to new Roanoke students and their families, addressing potential weather threats from Hurricane Irene:

Opening day is just around the corner. I hope you are as excited about the beginning of the academic year as I am.

Things get started at 9 a.m., Saturday, August 27th. You should have received a message a few weeks ago confirming your room assignment and providing you with a recommended arrival time. We strongly encourage you to plan your trip with that arrival time in mind to avoid traffic congestion and unusually long lines. To further assist with traffic flow, all students are asked to enter the campus from the Thompson Memorial Highway and Peery Drive entrance. There will be College personnel on Peery Drive to direct you to your residence hall and keep traffic flowing.

As you are probably aware, the National Weather Service is tracking Hurricane Irene off the southeastern coast of the United States. Current weather forecasts are predicting minimal impact from this storm system in the Salem/Roanoke area, but students and their families are encouraged to review weather forecasts and their potential impact on your travel plans. Roanoke College will continue to monitor the storms progress and will communicate any changes in the orientation schedule should it become necessary, however at this time no changes are anticipated.

While we are on the topic of "Mother Nature", you probably also heard about the minor earthquake in Virginia on Tuesday afternoon. Being such a rare occurrence on the east coast, the tremor was certainly something that startled all of us, but it had no real impact on the College or the surrounding area. It just made for a very interesting day!

Lastly, I want to encourage you to follow me online through my public Facebook page or Twitter account. I regularly share information about campus events and activities as well as student accomplishments and achievements. Periodically, I also provide students that follow me with opportunities to win various prizes. For example, on opening day new students will get an opportunity to win a free MicroFridge for the academic year from Melvin Corporation. So to get a chance to win a MicroFridge as well as other great prizes throughout the year click "Like" on my Facebook page - Dean Gene (Roanoke College Dean of Students) or "Follow" me on Twitter - @DeanGene.

Looking forward to seeing each of you on Saturday!
