  • SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College has received one of three Pride in Salem Green Awards for energy-efficient renovations on campus.

The award, given by the City of Salem, recognizes businesses and organizations that contribute to the beautification of Salem through landscaping, prominent exterior building or site renovation or responsible environmental initiatives.

Roanoke received the most votes in the Renovations and Energy Efficiency category. The public chose recipients of the Salem green awards through an online poll. The awards were presented at Monday's Salem City Council meeting.

Roanoke was nominated because of its energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly renovation of Lucas Hall, its first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building. The building, which houses classrooms and offices for the college's Modern Languages department, closed for 18 months in 2009 for renovations. It reopened in the fall of 2010.

Another campus structure is moving toward LEED certification. Roanoke's new 82,700-square-foot residence hall, under construction near Kerr Stadium, is registered for LEED's silver rating.

"The City of Salem has been a great partner to Roanoke College in our sustainability efforts," said David Wiseman, who is manager of library information systems at Roanoke and co-coordinator of the College's Sustainability Advisory Group. "When there are LEED certified buildings, it raises the sustainability profile for the city."

Roanoke College, a classic liberal arts college in Salem, Virginia, combines firsthand learning with valuable personal connections in a beautiful, undergraduate setting. Roanoke is one of just seven percent of colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society. The Princeton Review lists Roanoke as the 18th most beautiful campus in its "Best 376 Colleges" 2012 guidebook.
