Roanoke premieres the Public History Initiative with Open House
Salem, Va -- Roanoke College is pleased to host an open house and reception on Monday, January 24, to welcome the Western Regional Preservation Office of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to campus and to premiere the College's new Public History Initiative.
The WRPO, which supports local and regional historic resources-related activities, moved from southeast Roanoke into Hundley Hall on the College's Elizabeth Campus early last fall. The open house will be held at the new location at 962 Kime Lane in Salem from 2:30-4:30p.m.
The same day, a reception will be held from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the department of history, located on the third floor of the Bank Building on 223 East Main Street in Salem. The College celebrates the launch of the Public History Initiative, a new program of the department. A search is underway for a public historian to head up the program, which will feature a concentration in public history and a focus on experiential learning, including a close working relationship with the WRPO. Already, three Roanoke students are interning at the preservation office.
Dr. Mark Miller, professor of history, calls the relocation of WRPO to the Roanoke campus "a wonderful opportunity for our students." He adds, "We are excited to have the office with us."
The public is invited to attend both events.
