Roanoke College Hosts Fifth Relay for Life
SALEM, Va. —Roanoke College will host its fifth annual Relay For Life on Friday, April 7, 2006 from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. the following day on the College’s back quad. Relay For Life is a fundraising event supporting the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. This event is open to all campus and community members. There is no admission charge, but donations are requested.
Last year, Roanoke College teams raised over $38,000 for cancer research, education and advocacy programs through the American Cancer Society. This year’s goal is $40,000 and more than $12,000 has already been raised. Roanoke raised $20 per student at last year’s Relay For Life, making it one of the top college relays in the nation.
Relay For Life is designed to celebrate cancer survivorship. During the event, teams take turns walking or running laps around the College’s back quad. Each team tries to keep at least one member on the track at all times. The opening ceremony for this relay is at 6 p.m. and all cancer survivors are recognized and asked to take the first turn around the quad. Then the College’s teams will begin walking the track. Roanoke has over 50 teams this year.
Live entertainment and activities will take place most of the night. At 9 p.m., there will be a luminaria ceremony on the quad where all the luminaries, set up in memory of those who lost their battle with cancer or in honor of those who survived, will be lit.
There will be a location onsite where donations can be made, or contributions can be made online through the American Cancer Society’s website at http://www.acsevents.org/relay/roanokecollege.
