Roanoke College Announces Commencement Speaker

SALEM, Va.-The Rev. Dr. Donald Armentrout, the Quintard Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of the South's School of Theology, will be the keynote speaker at Roanoke College's commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5. The commencement ceremony takes place at 12:30 p.m. on the John R. Turbyfill '53 Quadrangle (front lawn). In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the C. Homer Bast Center.

Approximately 429 graduates are expected to receive degrees. Armentrout and Dr. Lewis Lancaster will be the recipients of honorary degrees at the ceremony.

Armentrout graduated from Roanoke College in 1961. He is a professor of church history and historical theology and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of the South's School of Theology. He received recognition as a Distinguished Alumnus from Roanoke College in 1992 and received an honorary doctor of divinity from General Theological Seminary.

Lancaster, a member of Roanoke's class of 1954, is professor emeritus at University of California, Berkeley and University of the West. He became president of the University of the West in 2004. He was chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Culture and director of the Electronic Buddhist Text Initiative at University of California.

A baccalaureate service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on May 5 in the Bast Center. Rev. Paul Henrickson, Timothy L. Pickle Dean of the Chapel at Roanoke, will be the featured speaker.
