Roanoke College Celebrates Several Enrollment Records
SALEM, Va.—Roanoke College set several records this fall with enrollment and retention at the top of the list. For the first time, enrollment at the college has exceeded 1,900. The total number of students attending during this fall semester is 1,936. A record 1,833 of those are full-time students.
This year’s freshman class at Roanoke is also the largest ever. Freshmen students numbering 534 arrived on campus in August. They join 89 other new students (transfers and those classified as special students), bringing the total for new enrolled students to 623, another campus record.
The entering class of students at the college boasts an average SAT score of 1123, which is yet another record for the college.
Retention of students at the college is also at an all-time high. Freshman retention—the percentage of students persisting at the college from their first year to their second—stands at 84.7 percent. This is the first time that figure has risen above 80 percent.
A record number of students live on campus this year as well, thanks to a multi-million dollar construction project, which yielded three residence halls and 156 spaces open to students this fall. Currently 1,224 students reside on the college’s main and Elizabeth campuses.
Mike Maxey, vice president for college relations, said, “Enrolling a record number of students is a great sign of the demand for Roanoke College. Setting a record for SATs and retention at the same time is even more satisfying. Both of those achievements indicate that bright students are attracted to Roanoke and they find the college to be a rewarding experience.”
Roanoke College, the country’s second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent, co-educational, four-year liberal arts college. Roanoke is one of just 270 colleges nationwide with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society.
