Roanoke College Hosts Tenth Annual Copenhaver Institute

SALEM, Va. — The tenth annual Margaret Sue Copenhaver Institute for Teaching and Learning (MSCI) will take place again this year at Roanoke College from June 22-24. The topic of this year’s institute is the “The Changing Face of Who We Teach”. The Institute is committed to helping educators foster within students a lifelong love for learning and will feature two keynote speakers, Dr. Rita Pierson and Dr. Diana Rodriguez. Also featured will be Virginia’s Teacher of the Year, Stephanie Doyle, a Roanoke graduate.

Doyle will be the featured speaker at the awards luncheon on Wednesday, June 24 as she discusses “Breaking Down the Barriers,” building on the idea that every child comes to school with invisible baggage and it is an educator’s job to sift that baggage away so learning can take place.

The goal of MSCI is to provide quality professional development opportunities for PreK-12 teachers, administrators and Roanoke College students. MSCI emphasizes cutting-edge perspectives relevant to the teaching profession, the determination of practical ways to engage students as lifelong learners and the examination of a variety of technology strategies to enhance students’ growth as learners.

Pierson and Rodriguez are internationally recognized authorities in special education. They are skilled in collaboration, co-teaching, inclusive school practices, team building and shared problem solving.
