  • Salem, Va. – Roanoke College officials are “tickled Maroon” about another record number of freshman deposits for fall 2009 semester. Currently, 574 first year students and 61 transfer students have made deposits to signify their intention to be a Roanoke College Maroon in the fall. This compares to 535 first year student deposits at the same time last year.

Once again, for the 10th consecutive year, Roanoke College broke its previous application record.

This year, 4,154 applications for admission were submitted to Roanoke, well above last year’s mark of 3,565 applications.

The College has reaffirmed its commitment to providing access for students by increasing scholarships and financial aid by more than $2 million to reflect student achievements and to help all students realize their dream of attending Roanoke College.

Roanoke’s financial picture is strong. The College remains on schedule to complete its 54th consecutive fiscal year with a balanced budget. The Board of Trustees approved a $79.3 million budget for the coming year and continues to monitor enrollment, endowment and fundraising as indicators of the College’s fiscal health.

In the fall, Roanoke will open a renovated first year residential complex. The College anticipates an increase in the percentage of students housed on campus next year, from 63 percent to 70 percent of students in college-owned housing. This increase is expected to have a positive impact on the campus atmosphere.

New Maroons join the campus at a fine time. Campus Activities Magazine named Roanoke College as the 2009 Campus of the Year recently. The recognition is due to the large number of student activities for the campus community---many of which are organized by students.
