Stark named All-American

Michael Stark still has another year to shine at Roanoke.

Michael Stark '11 was named to the 2009 Men's NCAA Division III All-America Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches of America Association. The 20th All-American men's soccer selection from Roanoke, he was a third-team pick in his first year at Roanoke last season.

Stark, from Menchville High School in Newport News, joins Maroon alumni Andy Mosen '63, Scott Anderson '70 and Ted Delledera '86 as the only men's soccer players to earn All-American honors at least twice at Roanoke.

The junior math major also received both First Team NSCAA All-South-Atlantic Region and First Team All-ODAC honors for the second straight year. A team captain, Stark finished third on the team in scoring with six goals and totaled 31 shots, including 11 shots on goal. Stark was named to both the 2009 Roanoke Invitational and the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament teams during the regular season.

Men's soccer coach Scott Allison '79 says, "Michael is big, strong and extremely fast. In the air, there's no better player in the country at our level."

Stark's contributions helped the Maroons finish 13-6-3 on the season and 7-2-1 in the ODAC. For the third straight season the team advanced to the ODAC Championship game.
