Teaching Institute Accepting Applications
The institute fee is $75 and includes breakfasts and lunches, two nights lodging at Roanoke College, entrance to all events and a copy of the keynote speakers' text. The scheduled events include presentations by leading education authorities, roundtable discussions, technology workshops, breakout sessions, and time designated for curriculum development. During the institute, participants will construct action plans for implementation in their respective schools.
Enrollment is limited and applicants will be accepted within categories designated by grade levels and positions on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications will be accepted beginning December 1.
The keynote speakers, Dr. H. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Carol A. Tomlinson, are leading practitioners in concept-based learning and differentiated instruction. Their books and professional development programs are recognized across the nation as efforts that are transforming teacher practice. Their work is dedicated to helping teachers create classroom practices that respond to students' learning needs and promote full and meaningful learning.
Guest speakers include Guy Doud, National Teacher of the Year in 1986, whose message deals with those things that are basic to life: love, family, relationships, success and dreaming dreams; and Dr. Gary Whitt, an assistant professor of education at Roanoke College specializing in instructional systems design, science education and the application of technology in instructional settings.
The Margaret Sue Copenhaver Institute for Teaching and Learning was established through an endowed gift from Mrs. Helen C. Hanes of Winston-Salem, N.C. in honor of her sister, Miss Margaret Sue Copenhaver, a retired public school educator from Richmond.
