Roanoke College announces three new appointments
SALEM, Va. - Dr. Michael A. Hakkenberg has been named as Roanoke College's interim vice president and dean of the college. Hakkenberg, a history professor and director of the College's honors program, replaces Dr. John T. Day, who served for six years before accepting a position as academic vice president at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Hakkenberg will serve in this role while the College conducts a national search for a permanent replacement for Day.
Mrs. Juliet J. Lowery has been named director of multicultural affairs after serving as the interim director for the past year. The office of multicultural affairs develops and implements educational, cultural and social programs that assist the College in recruiting, retaining and graduating a diverse community of students. Students from 40 states and 26 countries attend Roanoke College.
Dr. Jack Steehler, a long-time chemistry professor, has been named director of student/faculty research, a newly created position at the College. He will coordinate and administer the various student research programs offered by the College, including its Summer Scholars program and Undergraduate Research Assistants Program. In addition, Steehler has been awarded the Brian H. Thornhill Professorship, a five-year endowed appointment that recognizes outstanding teachers or mentors with a record of working with students in independent study and research.
