Roanoke College expecting a strong turnout for Virginia Private College Week
SALEM, Va. - Governor Tim Kaine has issued a proclamation recognizing July 27-August 1 as "Private College Week" in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Roanoke College is one of 25 private Virginia colleges that will offer campus tours and information sessions about admissions, financial aid and academic programs during Virginia Private College Week, which is sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia.
Sessions at Roanoke College will begin at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 1. Brenda Poggendorf, vice president of enrollment, expects to see a lot of students visiting the campus. "There is no better way to learn about a campus than through a visit," Poggendorf said. "Websites, e-mails and even phone conversations can only take you so far. The visit is when the experience and the people come alive."
"Visiting campuses in person is one of the most important steps in the college search process," explains Robert Lambeth, President of CICV. "I encourage parents to explore which college will be the best fit for their son or daughter, and I want to reassure them that a quality education at a Virginia private college is affordable and within reach."
To schedule a visit to Roanoke, go to https://webapps.roanoke.edu/admissions/events or call the Admissions Office at (540) 375-2270 or 1 (800) 388-2276.
Last year, Virginia private colleges gave students more than $200 million in scholarships and grants. In-state students attending a Virginia private college are also eligible for the Tuition Assistance Grant. A program of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the TAG will be approximately $3,200 next year. It is not based on need or merit and is an annual grant available for four years at the undergraduate level.
Students who visit at least three of the 25 campuses during the week will receive three application fee waivers. Students may use these waivers to apply to any CICV colleges for free. Last year, CICV colleges reported 1,800 visits during Virginia Private College Week, with students and families visiting from 32 states, District of Columbia, and U.S. Virgin Islands.
More information about Virginia Private College Week and the application fee waivers can be found at www.privatecollegeweek.org or by contacting any of the participating colleges. With 25 member institutions, CICV was founded in 1971 to promote the interests of nonprofit, private colleges and universities in Virginia.
