Roanoke College recognized for social media accomplishments

SALEM, Va. - Roanoke College has been recognized with a silver medal in the Web 2.0 College Olympics by, which in the spirit of the Olympics, recently awarded top social media innovators from the nation's colleges and universities. Roanoke College was ranked 22 out of the 50 higher education institutions that made the cut. Editors from chose the winners by scouring the social media landscape in higher education.

The editors chose Roanoke as a medal winner, citing the College's ability to find interesting news stories like the one on Hap Fisher, a 102-year-old alumnus who still publishes research papers; an accepted student Facebook group and the Roanoke College news blog. The Web site designed for Roanoke's mascot search,, also was cited as an outstanding example of social media use.

"Roanoke College has really made a strong effort with social media, and it is great to get recognition," says Whitney Anderson, internet communications manager. Anderson thinks higher education is a leader in emerging technologies because of the young audience.

Roanoke's social media efforts have benefitted the entire campus, enabling the admissions office to interact with prospective students through Facebook and helping current students and alumni to be aware of college events and happenings through Twitter, Facebook and the news blog.

Some of the other social media efforts for the College include Facebook fan pages, a Twitter page, Picasa web albums and photos on Flickr. Also, Roanoke just launched an improved and redesigned mobile Web site compatible with iPhone, Android and Palm.
