Why Join?

The Fraternity and Sorority Community has much to offer men and women at Roanoke College. The 4 Panhellenic sorority chapters currently consist of 228 women who are members.  Delta Sigma Theta, our National Pan-Hellenic Council chapter, has recently graduated all of its membership.  The 5 men's fraternities currently have 156 total members.

Scholarship - Sorority Women and Fraternity Men have consistently scored above the all-women's and all-men's academic averages. Each chapter has a scholarship plan in place that is built to support members in their academic endeavors.  Some aspects of these programs may include proctored study halls, study buddy or tutoring programs, assistance from faculty advisors, and awards and incentives for high academic achievers.  Greek men and women in their junior and senior years have the opportunity to join the Order of Omega, a national honor society for members of the Greek community who exhibit outstanding academics and involvement in the Greek community.

Philanthropies - Each chapter hosts various events throughout the year to raise money and awareness for each of their causes.  The charities supported by each chapter are as follows:

Leadership - Many fraternity men and sorority women held leadership positions while they were in high school, and Greek life offers members the chance to continue to develop their leadership skills. However, leadership roles in High School are not a requirement. Women and men can hold positions ranging from Alumni weekend chair to President at both the chapter and Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council levels. Students will have a chance to participate in workshops and retreats to continue to build these skills throughout their membership.  Many great female leaders including former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and Civil Rights Activist Coretta Scott King were each members of a sorority as college undergraduates.  And for the men, 2% of the entire U.S. male population are members of a fraternity, however 80% of the exectives of America's 500 largest corporations are fraternity men.

Social Involvement - Fraternities and sororities host a wide variety of social events such as theme socials, cookouts, formals, concerts, mixers, and date functions. Whether the Greeks are sporting their best disco gear for a seventies social or dancing the night away at their formal, you can bet that memories are in the making. You can't forget Roanoke College traditions such as Alumni Weekend where events are filled with games, spirit competitions, and fun!
