What to Expect From Counseling

Counseling is provided to further your learning to succeed in college and in life.  It is a collaborative effort in which you and your counselor identify what changes will be beneficial in your life.  What occurs is not easily described and varies with the therapeutic style of your counselor, your relationship with counselor and the particular problems you present.  It involves active effort on your part to make it turn out well including bringing up the topics that matter to you and working during the week upon matters discussed in sessions.  A mutual relationship of trust, respect, and honesty is the best way to make your desired changes happen.  Though you are ultimately responsible for making the changes you want, your counselor is committed to using his/her expertise in serving your best interests. 
 

The benefits may include learning how you and your life make sense, discovering different ways to go about succeeding in life, creating effective responses to specific problems, and reducing feelings of distress.  The risks may involve more intense memories and feelings about some events, realizing troubling aspects of yourself, or unexpected changes in relationships, all of which may not be improved to your satisfaction.  There is no guarantee counseling will be the way to reach your desired goals.  Other treatment options and referrals will be discussed with clients whose concerns are beyond what we can effectively serve.  Therefore, it is essential you talk to your counselor about any concerns you have over the course of treatment.  Initial problems and goals should be identified and discussed in the first few sessions, though these may be reviewed and changed.  Counseling ends when you and the counselor agree that your goals are satisfied or there is some other reason to stop.  You may stop at any time, but the best results often come by discussing your decision for at least one session. 

 
Sessions are typically for 45-50 minutes, once per week, at an agreed upon time.  Please arrive at your scheduled time, or to contact us by 24 hours in advance so as to cancel or reschedule. Should you miss without telling us, future appointment times may be given to another student, though we will work with you to find another time that fits your schedule.
