Aquatics Head Lifeguard


The Head Lifeguard, reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, is a leader within the aquatics program who must show a high level of commitment for its success.  The head lifeguard is responsible for scheduling guard coverage, supervising lifeguards, and ensuring the safety of participants when using the pool.


  • Approximately 6-8 hours per week
  • Hours vary but typically include afternoons and evenings during the week


  • Be on time and ready to work when scheduled and responsible as a key holder
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards
  • Coordinate pool availability and lifeguard coverage for athletic teams and student organizations who wish to use the pool for practice or an event
  • Monitor the pool while on duty
  • Check-in participants as they enter the pool area
  • Ensure the safety of participants while in the pool area
  • Keep the pool area neat and organized
  • Notify the director of any equipment or repair needs
  • Respond to emergency situations according to level of first responder training
  • Attend regular Campus Recreation leadership staff meetings
  • Conduct regular Lifeguard staff meetings
  • Keep an accurate record of hours worked and submit timesheet when due
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Must be a currently enrolled student in good standing
  • Demonstrated ability as an effective lifeguard
  • Exceptional communication skills and proven leadership ability
  • Current Lifeguarding certification
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification
