The purpose of our organization is to provide an educational outlet for members of the Roanoke College community interested in learning about horses, riding, horsemanship, and equine care and management. We also encourage students to take up horseback riding as a hobby or continue with their training and to allow equestrians to meet other equestrians. There are several riding opportunities, including Roanoke College's Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Riding Team.
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) provides collegiate riders the opportunity to compete as a team, without needing to have their own horse or equipment. IHSA riding is available for all skill levels. The team meets one or two times weekly for lessons, and competes at IHSA shows approximately five times per semester, with the goal of qualifying for Regional and Zone finals. Practices take about 4 hours and shows are about 9 hours long but are usually on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
We competes against various colleges such as: Hollins University,Bridgewater College, Randolph College, Radford University, James Madison University, University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, and Lynchburg College.
Anyone who wants to be apart of the team is more than welcome to join. There are no try outs and no limit to how many we can have on the team. Because we are a new team, we are accepting any riders no matter the number or experience. The only payments that need to be paid during the season is the amount for the lessons but you do need a helmet and boots. If you are competing you need the right attire required to show.
Roanoke College's IHSA riding team trains at Stone Bridge Farm in Natural Bridge, Va. Visit the Stone Bridge Farm website - www.stonebridgefarm.net for more information.
