Dr. Warren G. Bishop '25

Warren Gleaves Bishop of Medford, Oregon entered Roanoke College in 1921 with a major in pre-med. He then went on to the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, where he earned his medical degree in 1929. After completing his internship at Southern Pacific General Hospital in San Francisco, California, he moved to Medford, Oregon.

When Doctor Bishop went to Medford in 1930, the city was less than 50 years old, with a small population and very few doctors. Dr. Bishop practiced medicine there for 62 years as a physician and surgeon and as Medical Director of the Rogue Valley Manor, the Hearthstone Nursing Home and the Three Fountains Nursing Home. Dr. Bishop estimates that he has delivered more than 3,000 babies (many of them at home), and the number of surgeries he has performed is beyond his memory. During his medical practice, Dr. Bishop moved from obstetrics to geriatrics.

From 1943 until 1946, Dr. Bishop served as a commander in the United States Navy. He was a member of the American Medical association and the Oregon medical association. Dr. Bishop was also a member of the American Geriatric Society, the American Academy of General Practitioners, and the American Association of Family Physicians. He has also been active in the Masonic Shrine, Elks, and Kiwanis clubs.

The city of Medford and the state of Oregon have recognized Dr. Bishop numerous times for his many achievements. He was named Doctor of the Year by the Jackson County Medical Society and Doctor Citizen of the Year by the Oregon State Medical Association. He also has received the Alfred S.V. Carpenter Rogue Valley Distinguished Health Services Award and the Southern Oregon University Presidential Medal.

Bishop received the Roanoke College Medal in 1998 for his outstanding leadership, intellectual integrity, and good citizenship throughout his professional accomplishments and service to his community and alma mater. Once retired, Dr. Bishop maintained his fervent interest in medicine and education, providing scholarships for students at Roanoke College and for medical and nursing students in Oregon. Dr. Warren G. Bishop resided happily in Oregon with his wife and four children.
