INTERNSHIPS: Sociology, Public Health Studies, and Anthropology

Internship (SOCI/PHST/ANTH 416):

An internship (SOCI/PHST/ANTH 416) is designed to provide students with actual work experience in a community setting and an opportunity to work directly with people involved in the agency, service, or organization. The student should gain insight into the structure, responsibilities and routines of the setting, the work of the staff, and the background and needs of the clients.

The student may benefit in at least the following three ways: (1) gaining actual work experience as a means of enhancing theories and concepts learned in the classroom; (2) testing personal satisfaction with a particular type of work; and (3) making contacts that may help in securing future employment.

The community setting should benefit by gaining a reliable and hard-working volunteer who can help meet the needs of the operation.

Specific requirements for a SOCI/PHST/ANTH internship are:

1. Is classified as a junior or a senior
2. Has completed successfully a minimum of 3 courses in the program in which the student will be registered for internship credit (SOCI, PHST, or ANTH)
3. Has a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the program in which the student will be registered for internship credit, or special permission
4. Has submitted all required forms for internship registration to Dr. Rapp (applications are available online and from Dr. Rapp)

Submission of the internship forms to Dr. Rapp (schorpp@roanoke.edu, Office: 303 Trout Hall) and final arrangements with the organization should be made no later than one week prior to the start of the semester.
