Two Faculty Members Awarded Dean's Exemplary Awards
April 24, 2018
Two Roanoke faculty members have been recognized with the Dean's Council Exemplary Faculty Award. Dr. Adam Childers, associate professor of mathematics and statistics, receives the award for exemplary teaching. Dr. Chris Lassiter, associate professor of biology, is recognized for exemplary service.
Childers' attentiveness to the success of his students makes him an outstanding educator. In the statistics concentration, he sparks the interests of students with his "motivational moment" at the beginning of the class, flipping the classroom and leveraging new technologies to keep students engaged. Childers has created multiple variants of his 200-level INQ/HNRS course, teaches online courses during the summer and has helped increase math club activity. These are just a few ways in which he has inspired students and helped improve the curriculum.
Lassiter serves on the Academic Integrity Council, faculty governance system and various thesis committees. He is an orientation mentor, a member of LEAG (the LGBT Education and Advocacy Group), is SafeZone certified and organizes and judges local science fairs. Lassiter has served as director of undergraduate research since 2015, making students aware of opportunities and funding for their research. He also assists students in the Research Fellow Program, Summer Scholars, Summer Research Incentives and work-study research assistant positions.
